50/50 RAFFLE:
ZACH BROWN asked AUGUSTUS ADDAE-MENSAH to draw the winning ticket for today's 50/50 Raffle. The ticket belonged to BILL HEATH. Unfortunately the Ace of Diamonds eluded him. He received a package of golf balls as consolation prize.

PROGRAM:

PRESIDENT TIM introduced fellow Rotarian BILL HINZE, who is a Professor Geophysics, Emeritus, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences. His topic was "What's Next for Nuclear Power". Attitudes vary from country to country regarding nuclear power. He gave us a short history of the nuclear power industry in the U.S., beginning in 1957 with the first power plant in California. He then reviewed the challenges facing nuclear power production, including the economic recession of 2008, aging reactors and the risk from external events. BILL showed interesting graphics related to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is concerned about the reduced margin for safety. BILL predicts that gas fired plants will produce electricity until our country feels more confidence in nuclear plants.
