CONGRATULATIONS:

DAVID LUHMAN, President of the Lafayette Rotary Club Foundation, presented LARRY GRAHAM with a certificate in recognition of reaching Golden Service level of giving.

PROGRAM:

TERRY WEST thanked members who suggest programs and introduced VICKI BURCH who suggested today's speaker. VICKI introduced fellow Rotarian, SALLY WATLINGTON, whose subject was "A Woman Who Served -- Dorothy C. Stratton". Dorothy held several titles: Doctor; Dean; Captain; Executive Director. A book worm educated at Ottawa University in Kansas, she went on to earn an M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1924 and a Ph.D from Columbia University in N.Y. City in 1933. This was achieved when women did not receive high levels of education. SALLY told about Dorothy's time at Purdue, which included friendships with Amelia Earhart and Helen Schlemann. She championed programs for educating women in fields outside of Home Economics. World War II pulled Dorothy away from Purdue. She joined the Navy, became a Captain in the Coast Guard, created the name S.P.A.R., and enlisting 10,000 to join. Because of her service during the war, a Coast Guard Cutter bearing her name will be commissioned next March in California. SALLY'S stories about this accomplished woman kept us enthralled.
