PROGRAM:

TIM HULA introduced League of Women members, Jean Andres and Sherry McLaughlin, whose topic was Township Government in Tippecanoe County. Jean (Right) explained that there are 13 townships in our county, each with a trustee and board of directors elected for four-year terms. They are responsible for fire and emergency response, general assistance, cemeteries, parks and recreational areas and noxious weed control.

Sherry (Below) told us seventy-five percent of the budget goes for fire protection. The trustee takes application (normally 10 pages long) for assistance, which helps to pay current bills by voucher. No cash is involved.
Jean reviewed the problems with transparency, accountability, accessibility and inconsistent services. The League has several recommended changes for trustees all the way to the State legislature.

LINK OF THE WEEK:

Quote from Paul Harris just before his death in 1947: "I did not in 1905 forsee a world wide movement. When a man plans an unpromising sapling, can he be sure that someday here will grow a mighty tree?"
