PROGRAM:

TIM LUZADER noted that today is 1/11/11. It was on 1/11/1935 that Amelia Earhart flew solo across the Pacific from Honolulu to Oakland, becoming the first person ever to do that. He introduced John Norberg, who spoke about Amelia Earhart's connection to Purdue University. Purdue has the largest collection of Earhart memorabilia in the world. At the age of 31, Amelia flew across the Atlantic as the captain of a three person team in May of 1928, becoming a huge public figure overnight. After her solo flight across the Atlantic, the first since Lindberg's, she established a pattern of setting a record, writing a book or articles, and speaking about the adventure. These writings and speeches were her source of income. While speaking, the topic of careers for women always crept into the discussion. In 1934 Purdue's President Elliott met Amelia Earhart and invited her to campus to be an advisor to the Department of Aeronautics and career counselor to women students. She slept in the women's residence hall and had dinner with the students for two weeks each semester. While on campus, she persuaded PRF to fund an airplane for her "round the world" flight. On July 2, 1937 she disappeared somewhere over the Pacific.
