PROGRAM:

CAROLYN JONES introduced Ambassador Carolyn Curiel, Director of Project Impact at Purdue, who raised "A Call to Patriots: Bring Home a 2012 Presidential Debate". The 1976 Purdue graduate said 60 million people are expected to watch the 2012 Presidential Debates. She showed a video of excerpts from past presidential debates including Kennedy, Reagan, Vice President Dan Quail, and Bush, noting that it all began with the Lincoln/Douglas debates in 1858.

A nine-section application is in the hands of Students.

Audrey Jenkins is responsible for the transportation section. She says Purdue and the community have enough buses for the candidates, media and attendees. Sara Beasley and Sarah Kulow head up the City Services section. Their research shows that the Secret Service will have all of the city services at their disposal. Police and Fire departments are supportive and catering options are plentiful.

Jason Saunders and Liz Venatta are in charge of community involvement Shavonne Shorter is drumming up support from the high schools and community. Sara and Chellie Zou (you know them as the Silver Twins) are working on social media outreach and involving the Purdue Band.

Katie Cahill reported that students have raised the $8,000 application fee and are committed to the project. She wants us to be involved with the plans.

Ambassador Curiel noted that a web site is coming soon and shared the time-table with us. The location of the debates will be announced in October of 2011. Naming Purdue graduates at high levels in the federal government and business, she believes land grant universities are in service to students and to the world.
