PROGRAM:

JOEL RASMUS introduced Bill Shaffer, Professor of Political Science at Purdue, who will talk about "History and Perspective on Election Day". He reviewed the Tea Party Movement, saying it is not a party by definition, and listed what the party stands for. As Tea Party members are generally more affluent than most, it is an economic protest with concerns about the size of the federal government, the growing deficit, and general distrust of governmental institutions. He reviewed historical parallels where economic downturns created third parties like the Greenback Party in 1873, the Populist Party in 1892 and the Progressive Movement of 1924. All receded as prosperity returned. Professor Shaffer believes that third parties present new ideas or policies, creating an electoral threat, resulting in the major party stealing their thunder.
