LAFAYETTE ROTARY CLUB FOUNDATION:

BOB GRIFFITHS (left), President of the Board, presented the Annual Report and reviewed the numbers. DAVE LUHMAN (below right) gave us a brief history of the Campership program. In 1921 EDGAR GOLDSBERRY, President of the Rotary Club, responded to a comment by ERNEST BROWN, Director of the YMCA regarding the lack of a camp in this area, donated 5.4 acres of land for Rotary Park. Sixty members raised/donated $6,000 for a clubhouse. The camp was used for many years by boy scouts, girl scouts, the YM, Purdue, and the Rotary Club. As other camps were built, and upkeep on Rotary Camp grew, the club sold the Camp in 1976 for $ 25,000. The Proceeds were placed in trust with the interest to be used for camperships. Two Thousand Dollars is matched by $2,000 from the club for a variety of camps each summer.

PROGRAM:

GREG KAPP introduced RYLA chairs JIM THOMPSON (left) and PAUL DEL RE (below right) who described the camp that high school students attend at Camp Tecumseh each spring. RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) began in 1960. The northern district in Indiana has participated for 24 years. PDG TOM FISHER got our district involved in 2008. Camp Tecumseh is a fantastic camp; very professionally run. It is a great location - a destination - with a finely tuned program and an Executive Director who is a Rotarian. Eighteen Clubs sent 46 students from 25 high schools in 2010. It is a 2.5 day program beginning on a Friday afternoon. The students are assigned to teams who learn and work together. This makes it possible for one teenager to influence 4 or 5 other teens. Rotary targets "the neglected majority" who are "diamonds in the rough." Our Club has budgeted funds to send six students from our area to camp next spring.
