ROTARY FOUNDATION MOMENT:

CLIFF DOCHTERMAN, one of Rotary's elder statesmen, recalled that in the early days of the organization, clubs spent their efforts on local programming. In Indiana, Riley Hospital was supported, resulting in a building that bears the name of Rotary. In 1955 the Sauk vaccine for polio was developed and at the same time Rotary was ready for an international project. That year six million people in the Philippines were immunized with great success. DOCHTERMAN commented that it was lucky that Rotary chose to eliminate polio, and not hunger. When you feed people one day, they are hungry again the next day. We are very close to eradicating polio worldwide.

MEMBERSHIP MOMENT:

CAROL GALBRAITH reminded us that August is Membership Month. She asked GREG KAPP to give us his "elevator speech in 30 seconds or less". He likes belonging to a club where he can get to know so many good people and work on service project with friends. MAUREEN GRABOWSKI recalled reading in the Rotarian Magazine that the 1993 International Convention would be in Australia. She wanted to visit that country, so went to the convention and has been to every convention since. That is where you really see all of the good work that Rotary does around the world. The homework assignment from CAROL is to come up with your own 30-second speech. In the coming weeks we will be called upon to share it.

PROGRAM:

Governor of Rotary District 6560, SALIM NAJJAR, welcomed Brazilian RYE student Aline Muniz to Indiana. She is now a Hoosier! And he thanked CAROL GALBRAITH for her pep talk for Membership. SALIM explained that the district governor, the officers and committee chairs exist to help clubs achieve their goals. He reminded us of our importance to Rotary and explained that this year's Rotary Theme "Building Communities, Bridging Continents" fits well with his occupation. He came from Lebanon to study in Louisiana. After his first year he transferred to Tri State College in Angola, Indiana, graduating in 1962 as an engineer. His career was spent designing bridges. In Rotary bridge building means doing business with fellow Rotarians, serving our communities and the world through our projects. SALIM has two goals for this year: increase membership and increase contributions to Rotary International. He wants us to double the size of our club.

Each member is asked to bring in one member during the year 2010-2011. Our contributions to RI last year reached the monetary goal because of generous Rotarians, but this year we need to increase our participation from 75% to 100%.

Every Rotarian Every Year means every Rotarian needs to contribute something. Finally, SALIM reminded us that Rotary adds value and meaning to our lives and our clubs add value and meaning to other people's lives.
