INTERNATIONAL PROJECT REPORT:

JACK KELLEY reported on his recent trip to Haiti. This was his first trip since the completion of the five water wells we provided at schools. Four wells work; one is waiting for repair. He also had slides of earthquake damage and tent cities. Our club provided three of the tents in use.

PROGRAM:

SUSAN KYCHKA introduced Steven Wereley, whose topic was "Analyzing the Oil Catastrophe in the Gulf". Because he is a Professor of Engineering at Purdue with expertise in Microscopic Fluid Mechanics, National Public Radio's Richard Harris discovered him in May and asked him to analyze BP's newly released video of the oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico. This is a problem that Professor Wereley is very familiar with and found no trouble in solving using manual feature tracking and simple math to calculate the number of barrel per day. After his figure of about 70,000 barrels per day reached the media (as opposed to BP's announcement of 5,000 barrels per day), and more than 800 major media placements in a month, he because an instant celebrity. About 4.9 million barrels of oil flowed into the Gulf. BP says that 75% of that has been removed. The remaining 1.25 million barrels of oil is thick, sticky crude that will not break down or evaporate quickly.
