PROGRAM:

JACK KELLEY introduced Beth Ensign, coordinator of Clarian Health Hospice. As an emergency room nurse, she was often the first person to tell the family that medical procedures would no longer help. She talked about common myths related to hospice. Founded in 1977 at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, it was the first hospice program in the state. Defining palliative care as symptom management and hospice as life expectancy of six months or less, 82% of the patients are 65 and older. She listed all of the services offered by hospice and then answered several good questions from club members.
