PROGRAM:

MIKE SIMPSON, chair of the Scholarship/Citizenship Committee, introduced committee members ED HEMMER, DAVE MCGAW, ELDON ORTMAN, BARB REIF, SUSAN SMITH and LIZ SOLBERG. He then introduced Superintendents Joe Brettnacher, Lafayette Catholic School; Glade Montgomery representing Dr. Ed Eiler, Lafayette School Corporation; Dr. Scott Hanback, Tippecanoe School Corporation; and Dr. Rocky Killion, West Lafayette School Corporation. Principals Ron Shriner, West Lafayette High School; John Becker, McCutcheon High School; and Joe Brettnacher, Central Catholic High School were asked to stand. Finally Counselors Cheryl Wiles, Jefferson High School, Joyce Grimble, West Lafayette High School and Bonnie Crawford, Harrison High School were introduced.

MIKE asked Elliott Zak, son of Stanislaw and Mary Ann Zak, Central Catholic High School, to join him at the front of the room. Elliott is a National Honor Society member, and an athlete who intends to major in Philosophy and Engineering at Purdue. He also intends to learn Polish and spend some time in that country.

SUSAN SMITH introduced Nick Spoentgen, son of Andrew and Isabelle Spoentgen, Jefferson High School, saying Nick is involved in robotics and music. He intends to study Aeronautical Engineering at Purdue with the dream of working for NASA.

BARB REIF introduced Elena HogenEsch, daughter of Harm HogenEsch and Ala Samarpapungavan, West Lafayette High School, highlighting her participation in the Hunger Hike, Humane Society and Soccer. This National Honor Society member speaks French and intends to study Neuroscience at Emery University with a goal of studying medicine.

BARB also introduced Natalie Newton, daughter of Sam and Denise Newton, Harrison High School, noting that she is the Student Council President. Also a National Honors Society member and soccer player, this Relay for Life team captain is headed to Indiana University to be an athletic trainer and eventually an ER Doctor.

MIKE brought Clayton Oppy, son of Christopher and Christine Oppy, McCutcheon High School, before the group. Clayton is the Senior Class President and Historic Gates to China Student Ambassador. He also is a National Honors Society member and a Purdue Presidential Scholar. He will study Biomedical Engineering at Purdue.

PRESIDENT CHRISTA congratulated the students on their $1,000 awards and thanked the committee for a job well done.
