PROGRAM:

STEVE STUCKY introduced Dr. Nicholas Palmer, Music Director of Lafayette Symphony Orchestra. Nick, who has been conducting since he was 16 years old, said he is often asked, "What does a conductor do?" The cartoonist's answer to that question is: "Wave your hands until the music stops, then turn around and bow." Actually it involves studying scores (about 150 hours per piece), coaxing the musicians to play well together, fund raising, scheduling and making speeches to Rotary Clubs! Lafayette Symphony Orchestra has a great staff and support groups, enabling it to expand its programming and the number of concerts. The Symphony will celebrate its 60th birthday next year.
