CONGRATULATIONS:

BOB GRIFFITHS, President of The Lafayette Rotary Club Foundation, presented a certificate honoring Chuck Grant (Below left)for achieving Golden Service level of contribution to the Foundation. He also presented PRESIDENT CHRISTA (Below right) with a certificate and a new badge for Diamond Service level of contributions, noting that this demonstration of commitment to the work of Rotary is the mark of real leadership.

PROGRAM:

LIZ SOLBERG introduced ROGER SIMS, Director, High Speed Rail Assn., who explained that the Departments of Transportation of the Midwest states planned the high speed rail routes fifteen years ago. He was here nine years ago and expected to be riding high-speed rails by now. The three routes through Indiana are Chicago/Cleveland, Chicago/ Detroit, and Chicago/ Cincinnati. Application for $71.4 Million in Federal funds through the stimulus package has been made to build 29 miles of rail across northern Indiana from Porter to the Illinois border. Another project from Chicago to Cleveland involves environmental and engineering studies at a cost of $2.8 Billion. This will result in $23.1 Billion in benefits and 4,540 jobs. Other benefits include improved quality of life, environmental improvements, increased home values and increased tax revenues. Several good questions were answered and the discussion continued after the meeting.
