PROGRAM:
BARB REIF introduced Danielle Gaylord, E.D. who heads the YWCA Domestic Violence Intervention and Protection Program, which is in its 30th year of service to Tippecanoe and several surrounding counties. The 24-bed facility has housed 181 women and 141 children so far this year. The women have 30 days to find housing, a job and child-care. Counseling, referrals and resources are provided the first day. Half of the funding comes from government grants, twenty five percent from United Way, and the other twenty five percent from businesses, foundations and individuals. The Clay Bowl project is their main fundraiser. Domestic violence is the cause of three deaths every day nationwide; 65 in Indiana last year. The cost to the nation is $8.3 Billion, making it a big problem. |
