PROGRAM:

VICKI BURCH introduced Susan Windnagel and JoAnne Gutek, co-founders of Circle of Friends, a creative program for people with memory loss. Alzheimer's Disease is progressive and fatal; no known cure; and affects about 120,000 people in Indiana. Circle of Friends began in conjunction with the speech therapy sessions at Purdue when JoAnne noticed positive affects of the activity. Treatment (medications), cognitive communication, and caregiver support are the basic philosophy of the group. Brain Builders Men's Group meets for 90 minutes each week where they make Life History Books, participate in cognitive language activities and creative art activities. Circle of Support for primary caregivers meets weekly to educate, build skills and share friendship. A women's group is in the future. Memory Walk on October 4th at noon at Cumberland Park will help raise funds to find a cure.
