PROGRAM:
President Elect DICK RAHDERT introduced Bob Nielsen, Professor of Agronomy and Extension Specialist, who outlined the three responsibilities of Land Grant Universities: Research, Teaching and Extension. Through campus and county activities the mission is to improve the lot in life of the citizens of the state. Indiana's major crops are corn (5th in the country) and soybeans (4th in the country). The equation for success for farming is "Corn Production Profit = (Yield x Price) (Inputs x Cost)". The major challenges of farming are weather, insects, disease and critters. His job is to advise farmers regarding ways to increase yields and minimize costs. In an industry where producers must construct a solar powered photosynthetic factory every year in each of their fields, he and other scientists within the College of Agriculture are kept busy researching, educating and hopefully improving on these factories. |
