PROGRAM:
PRESIDENT CHRISTA introduced Roger Tormoehlen, Professor in the Youth Development and Agricultural Education Department, who gave us the history and an update on the 4-H program. He grew up on a dairy farm in southern Indiana and was a 4-H member for nine years. Cooperative Extension Service is part of U.S.D.A. and is administered by Land Grant Universities in most cases. It is funded by federal, state and local governments. Indiana has an office in each of the 92 counties. Beginning in 1902, there were three programs: Agricultural Service, Home Ec. and Youth (4-H). These programs still exist with name changes and expanded missions that include more technology and diversity. Of the 216,000 4-H members in Indiana, most live off the farm, with slightly more females than males. There are 18,000 volunteers working with youth whose projects involve making and exhibiting something. The State Fair is the largest event of the year. |
