PROGRAM:

PRESIDENT ELECT DICK RAHDERT introduced Andrew Dykstal, a home schooled student from West Lafayette who won the American Legion Speech Contest (and the $18,000 scholarship that goes with it!). He plans to attend Hillsdale College in Michigan next year, majoring in political Science. "A More Perfect Union" was the title of his speech, which eloquently made the point that a more perfect union is dependent on the virtue of the individual citizens.

ARVID OLSON led us in singing the second verse of R-O-T-A-R-Y.

PRESIDENT ROB reflected on his year as our leader. He reviewed the many accomplishments and thanked all the committee chairs and volunteers. A short list of the activities includes: Gus Macker and Back Pack programs - resulting in awards; hosting two international groups and a visiting District Governor from Mexico City on short notice; Overhauling the committee structure; introducing 17 new members; awarding 17 Paul Harris pins and nearly as many Golden Service certificates; hosting a new member reception and hearing several interesting Vocational Moments.

His thought for the week included several quotes from famous people.

"Happy trails to you, until we meet again." Dale Evans

"I deserve respect for the things I did not do." Dan Quayle

"I"ll be back." Arnold Schwarzenegger

"Thanks for the memories." Bob Hope

"I shall resign the office of presidency effective at noon tomorrow." Richard M. Nixon

"The time has come to say goodnight,

I hope I've made a friend.

And so we'll say "May God bless you"

Until we meet again." Red Skelton

ROB received a standing ovation as thanks for his service. He then swore in CHRISTA KECK as our new President for 09-10. CHRISTA then presented ROB with his Diamond President's Pin and the traditional Gavel Plaque, along with copies of Ripples for the past year.

PRESIDENT CHRISTA asked club officers and board members to come to the front or the room where she conducted a short swearing in ceremony. This procedure is common in other clubs, but as far as we know is a first for our club.

"I, (state your name), do solemnly pledge that I will fulfill the duties of my office in the Rotary Club of Lafayette to the best of my ability, that I will support President Kenny, and will abide by our club's constitution and bylaws."

CHRISTA then said: "Thank you for being willing to serve. May I present the Lafayette Rotary Club Board for the year 2009-2010."

Christa introduced PDG BILL HATFIELD as our only living Past District Governor and asked any of the 32 living past presidents of the club in attendance to stand and be recognized.

Further excerpts from her speech: "In 2009-2010, RI, our district as well as our Lafayette Rotary Club will continue to emphasize and encourage work in the areas of water, health and hunger, and literacy both here and abroad. These areas are so very basic to human life.

"We want to maintain the high quality of our membership, so please invite that special, creative and interesting friend you know and ask him or her to consider becoming a Rotarian."

"We have again been asked to support RI with Every Rotarian Every Year. Please help me accomplish our goal by donating $100 dollars this year to the Rotary Foundation. May I suggest that you put $1 aside per day to get this done long before Christmas!!"

ARVID OLSON led us in singing RO-RO-Rotary by BOB VERPLANK.
