PROGRAM:

VICKI BURCH introduced her husband DAVID BRIDGES, Professor of Biological Sciences at Purdue, who discussed "Global Warming" and asked the question, "Is It Anthropogenic?" He explained that the term "Global warming" has morphed into "Climate Change" because the earth has not warmed over the last decade, and might even have cooled.. DAVID described the "hockey stick "graph created by Michael Mann, promoted by the IPCC in 2001. He discussed some of its scientific weaknesses, notably that it was dependent on questionable bristle cone data and had suppressed the Medieval Warm Period and the Little Ice Age. Evidence shows that these were global events.. He then discussed the natural variability of the earth's climate and the fact that our present interglacial is not as warm as the last interglacial period when oil and coal were not being burned. He discussed the global carbon balance and the fact that oil, gas and coal contributed 5% to the total carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere, of which under 20% originated in the U.S. and somewhat more than that from China. He concluded that our present climate was well within the bounds of natural variation, and that there was no human "signature". Further, he pointed out that science does not work by consensus. The number of scientists who agree is not important. What is important is the scientists who are correct. He concluded by saying there was no scientific justification for the climate bill recently approved by the U.S. House of Representatives.
