VOCATIONAL FOCUS:

CHRISTA KECK was born in Germany and remembers the horrors of war. Her father was a prominent physicist who was brought to the U.S. after the war to work here for five years. After a year's separation (when she was eight years old) the family was reunited in America. Her education in modern languages led to a 40-year career in teaching German. She has received several awards over the years, including Best Teacher from students and Bundesverdienstkreuz, the Federal Cross of Merit, Germany's highest honor for civilians. CHRISTA'S life is enriched by the contacts she has made through her teaching, organizations and volunteer activities.

PROGRAM:

ROB introduced PDG JIM GRAHAM, who reviewed the very interesting and sad story of Qudrat Wardak, who received the "Gift of Life" at Riley Children's Hospital and then died as a result of dehydration on the long flight home. As a famous broadcaster says, JIM then told us "the rest of the story". Qudrat's father, Hakim, was a refugee most of his life, fleeing Taliban intimidation. As a result of coming to the U.S. for his son's heart surgery, he could see ways his education could help his people. With funds from friends in Indiana, Hakim has started a clinic and a school where 50% of the students are female. He plans to drill a well to eliminate cholera in his village. JIM saw Hakim on his trip to Afghanistan when he helped with a National Immunization Day through Rotary. Hakim needs about $60,000 to build a building for the school and drill the well. JIM has collected $32,000 so far. Anyone wishing to help can make a check payable to "World Community Service Foundation" (501 3 C) and send it to Brownsburg Rotary Club, P.O. Box 457, Brownsburg, IN 46112. Please note for "QUDRAT SCHOOL."
