ANNOUNCEMENTS:
  • Remember to make your contribution to the Every Rotarian Every Year $100 campaign. Rotary International depends on us to keep its projects going.

  • CHRISTA announced that so far $3,625 has been contributed to the Backpack project toward a goal of $8,000. These funds enhance the quality of food that the children are given.

  • BETTY DOVERSBERGER asked us to sign up to help with the Women's Shelter Christmas Food Boxes. They will be packed at 9:00 A.M. on Saturday, December 6th.

  • LETA KELLEY announced that help is needed this Thursday at 5:30 P.M. at Miami Elementary School to pack backpacks.

  • SUZANN SHACKLETON informed us that there would be a Rotary booth at the International Festival, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds from November 20 - 23. Volunteers are needed to staff the booth. Contact ROBERTA GRAHAM rrgjgg@prodigy.net

  • BRYAN METZGER, chair of the Salvation Army committee, encouraged us to sign up to ring the bell on December 13th. There will be eleven sites, as in the past. Neighbors, friends, children, grandchildren and spouses are welcome to ring the bell with you.

  • JOHN SANDERSON announced that an anonymous challenge gift has been received for matching gifts to Polio Plus. Gifts to the Lafayette Rotary Club Foundation designated for Polio Eradication will be matched dollar for dollar and the entire amount will count toward the member's Paul Harris Fellow. It is available until the funds are exhausted.

PROSPECTIVE NEW MEMBER:
Zarjon Baha, sponsored by BILL HATFIELD, has been approved by the Board of Directors for membership. If there are no objections, he will be introduced soon.

JANE'S CORNER:
Highlights of the Board Meeting:
  • The Board accepted the resignation of DONNA MELOY from the club and CARL REW from the board.

  • JIM KLUSMAN, chair, JOHN COREY, KEITH SMITH and JANE TURNER were appointed to the Governance Committee.

  • It was agreed to send a "Letter of Intent" to participate in the Open World project again next year.

  • The Membership Committee will have a membership brochure ready soon. A Sponsor Checklist Form will be given to members who would like to propose a new member along with the proposal card.


DEATH OF A FORMER ROTARIAN:

Retired Col. Thomas R. Bruce Jr., 94, of West Lafayette, died Friday, Oct. 31, He was born July 13, 1914, in Mexico, Mo., and was the son of the late Thomas R and Helen Milby Bruce. He graduated from the University of Missouri in 1937 and the Army War College in Carlisle, Pa., in 1955.
He married Frances L. Wise on Nov. 9, 1940, in Tulsa, Okla., and she survives. Mr. Bruce served in the Army for 33 years, retiring in 1966. Mr. Bruce was a member of United Methodist Church of West Lafayette, Rotary Club and the Lafayette board of the American Red Cross.

Jim Turley writes: He and Dave Pfendler were friends. He also golfed with a Purdue Associate Ag Dean Verne Freeman in a group I remember seeing on the course in the mid 80's. Later in life he was a member of the Lafayette Chapter, Military Officers Association. Fritz Cohen and others stayed in touch with him over the years. I spent the summer of 1964 working for him at Fort Riley where he was the ROTC Summer Camp Commander.
