PROGRAM:

CHRIS JOHOANNSEN introduced is friend and colleague, Dick Arnold, who began his presentation with a photo of a starving child in Africa and the statement that illiteracy and innumeracy are a greater threat to the world than terrorism. He went on to explain that 70% of our planet is covered with water; 8% of the remaining surface is suitable for agriculture. The present population is dependent on 1.5 acres per person for sustenance. With little regard for ecosystems and the environment, sustainability is seeping away. There is hope for the future if stewardship of all resources is recognized as important. The universal shared moral values: honesty, compassion, fairness, responsibility and respect, need to apply to nature as well as humankind.

PRESIDENT ROB'S THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

"To think that one child would go to bed hungry somewhere in this country is heartbreaking. To know how many do is virtually incomprehensible. This is not only a problem that exists in the far reaches of the globe, it happens right here in our own back yard. Together, as concerned citizens, we must do more to make sure every child's needs are met."
Katie Couric
