PROGRAM:

PRESIDENT ROB opened the Club Assembly by explaining that several years ago a process was set in motion to have a signature fund raising project and a signature community project. This would increase awareness of Rotary in the community and raise more funds.

He introduced TOM MORAN, chair of the Gus Macker committee. The three on three basketball tournament is a fund raiser where the effort and income are shared with the Purdue Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. They use their share of the funds to build a house and we use our share to fund the Back Pack Program. TOM introduced his committee and reminded us that September 27 and 28 are the dates. St. Elizabeth parking lot is the place. The three ways Rotarians can help are: 1. Promoting team registration, 2. Helping at the registration desk on September 26 and 27 (sign up sheet on the bulletin board and on line), and 3. Sponsor a team for $116.00. Make checks payable to the Lafayette Rotary Club Foundation. The amount will be tax deductible and count toward Golden Service recognition.

JAYNE FEATHERS, chair of the Backpack Project, introduced the people on her committee who are making things happen. Packing backpacks will occur every Thursday. The backpacks will be distributed on Fridays. There will be a system of committee chairs to recruit people to help each week. Seceurity clearance is needed for anyone entering the school. The school pays the fee.
Major achievements of this group include purchasing top of the line backpacks. A backpack maintenance committee will be needed to keep them repaired. Payless on Maple Point Drive has agreed to honor certificates for certain products at reduced rates. This is a way to supplement the packaged food that goes in the backpack. Sponsors for these certificates are requested. A gift of $100 through the Lafayette Rotary Foundation will provide one child with fresh milk for the school year.

Finally, PDG BING PRATT serving in his position as District Foundation Chair presented a most welcome District Matching Grant of $2,200 for the Backpack project. This is the largest grant awarded this year. Special thanks go to JAYNE for hard work in p reparing the application and to the District for extending the deadline to make this possible.
