CLUB CONCERNS:
PRESIDENT JOHN asked us to keep the following in our thoughts and prayers: BOB BROCK, ROY WHISTLER, RAY KAVANAUGH.

PROGRAM:

PRESIDENT JOHN introduced fellow Rotarian, FRITZ COHEN, who talked to us about "The Italian Renaissance", which began in the early 14th century and lasted until the end of the 16th century. It was a time of critical inquiry into all assumptions. Humanists studied grammar, rhetoric, poetry, history and philosophy. It set up a conflict between reason and faith, prompting the Reformation and Counter-reformation. Even government was transformed by the rise of city-states and the fall of feudal lords. Several good questions followed the presentation.

GUESTS:

Carol Brunnty, guest of KATHY KROLL

JANE'S CORNER:

After the meeting, TERRY WEST gave us a quick overview of the issues related to drilling for oil in ANWR (Alaska National Wildlife Refuge). Several members stayed to learn the location of the production area, the size of the oil reserves and the availability of the existing pipeline. TERRY made the point that even though Alaskan oil will not eliminate the need to import oil, every little bit helps. All of the efforts to create alternate sources of energy add up, especially if conservation is included in the equasion.

PRESIDENT JOHN'S THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK:

Without music, life would be a mistake. Friedrich Nietzche
