PROGRAM:

ROB GALBRAITH introduced George Okantey, director of the Science Bound Parent Program and extension educator who was speaking for Wesley Campbell, director of the Science Bound Program, today due to a death in his family. Science Bound, is an exciting program made possible by a partnership between Purdue University, Indianapolis Public Schools, and the Indianapolis business community. Science Bound encourages IPS students to consider careers in science, engineering, technology, math/science education or agriculture and puts them on the path to earning a Purdue degree.

This program mentors 8th through 12th grade students at IPS, encouraging them to enroll in classes and pursue careers in science, engineering, technology, and math/science education. Those IPS students who complete the 5-year Science Bound program and gain acceptance to Purdue University in an approved field receive a full-tuition scholarship to Purdue for eight semesters. Around 45 students from the 24 IPS middle schools are added to Science Bound each year. Criteria for selection are based on national test scores and the students potential to succeed in the program. Okantey also invited any Rotarian to participate with their time, talents or expertise - just contact him to volunteer.
