CLUB CONCERNS:
PRESIDENT JOHN asked us to keep the following in our thoughts and prayers: BOB BROCK, ROY WHISTLER, RAY KAVANAUGH, JOHN BARRETT, who had surgery this week, and DAVE SATTLER and family whose granddaughter lived only two hours.
VOCATIONAL FOCUS:

CARL REW was born in Niagara Fall, NY to parents of modest means. When he figured out how modest the means were, he worked a paper route to save money for college. The tough schedule and work requirements his first two years at Purdue were offset by the fact that he met Carol McQueen, daughter of Rotarian Roy McQueen. They were married and he finished his degree at State University of NY, Buffalo. CARL held several positions and began a business venture with Wabash Valley Nurseries. In the end the Indiana State Chemist's Office at Purdue gained the benefit of his expertise. All through this CARL has been a community volunteer, helping many organizations and demonstrating Service Above Self.

CONGRATULATIONS:

JIM TURLEY presented STEVE THOMPSON with Paul Harris Fellow recognition. He also replaced ZBIGNIEW GRABOWSKI'S pin with three more. One contains 4 sapphires, one 5 sapphires, and one with a ruby. The ruby signifies gifts of at least $6,000. Thank you both for your generous contributions to support the good work of Rotary throughout the world.

PROGRAM:

BILL LOVELL introduced Larry Nies, Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue, who discussed climate change. He is on the steering committee of the Purdue Center for Climate Change and has been instrumental in improving the carbon footprint for the University. The attitude toward climate issues and sustainability employs a philosophy of risk management. Larry presented several graphs showing the chemicals that destroy Earth's protective atmosphere. He presented worldwide energy usage and converted it into oil equivalents; and concluded by saying conservation is the number one way to increase energy independence.
