THANK YOU:

PRESIDENT JOHN'S "Thank you for caring a whole awful lot" plaque went to JANE SMITH for her work as Treasurer of the Foundation. Congratulations!

CONGRATULATIONS:

DICK RAHDERT explained that the Service Above Self Award is presented to an individual who, through their vocation, exemplifies Rotary's standards. He introduced ED HEMMER who presented this year's award to JOE BOORMAN. It was twelve years ago when JOE changed careers, in order to play the part that he was created to do. He thanked the club for the honor while assurring us that he loves his job.

PROGRAM:

JEANNE NORBERG presented the Back Pack Program goals for the community and our Club. In addition to providing food, it lets the children know that someone cares about them. She quoted statistics indicating that the poverty level for a family of three is $16,500 annually and a quote from Ed Eiler saying that more than half of the elementary schools in Lafayette have 50% of the student- body who qualify for federal food programs. At Klondike Elementary School 345 of the 956 students are in the free lunch program. That means they get food on school days, but not necessarily on weekends. Rotary could feed 80 of those children on weekends during the school year. JAYNE FEATHERS has volunteered to chair this project. Klondike School will be contacted. A storage place large enough for 240 pounds of food is needed. Teams of people to fill the backpacks and a way to transport the filled back-packs are needed. This program will begin next fall. Be thinking of ways you can be part of this exciting and necessary project.
