BIRTHDAY TABLE:

JIM HOBBS introduced all members celebrating a birthday in March and announced that so far this generous group has contributed $1,435. A Big Happy Birthday to all!

PROGRAM:

ROB GALBRAITH introduced VIC LECHTENBERG, Interim Provost of Purdue University, who talked to us about "Service Learning: A Benefit to Students & Local Business". He noted that since he came to Purdue in 1967 he has worked for five of the eleven Presidents of Purdue and has seen at least forty-five new buildings. Similar growth has been seen in research programs and the regulatory environment. Major influences on the university include the Land Grant Act, the GI Bill and research funded by the federal government after WWII. In the last ten years economic development has blossomed through the Discovery Park Research Centers, Technology Park, the I-65 Corridor; the Technical Assistance Program; and the Co-Operative Extension Service. Since K-12 Education is reached the point where 27 Indiana counties need 30 years to catch up to the national average, Purdue is stepping up to partner in improving teaching skills, upgrading curriculum and changing leadership attitudes. Even though there is a leadership change and a new strategic plan, Purdue's mission remains the same as it has been for over 100 years.
