VOCATIONAL FOCUS:

JEANNE NORBERG grew up in Chicago. But most of her growth has been here in Lafayette. She earned a degree in Journalism from Purdue and became the first woman to have a political column in the state during a year when several women were elected to public office. Married to John Norberg, with three children, Jeanne has worked for Purdue for 23 years. Her current position as spokesperson for the university and head of Purdue News Service is a 24/7 job. She is happy to be part of one of the most important things in the world -- education.

WELCOME NEW MEMBER:

GORDON KINGMA introduced Elbert "Bert" Strain, who lives with his wife, Myrtle "Mert" at 1241 Skyline Road, Lafayette, IN 47905, Phone 447-1944, e-mail: bertandmertstrain@verizon.net. Bert is retired from Huntington Bank.

PROGRAM:

ROB GALBRAITH introduced Steve Wilson, professor of Communication at Purdue, who explained the research to evaluate the Cape Care Program. The program uses the Toddler Playground at the old Washington Elementary School, which our club helped fund. The program is being studied to assess its effectiveness with the prospect of it becoming a model for other communities. There is room for 16 families with toddlers to teach the parents better practices and to offer the toddlers a safe place to play and learn. Professor Wilson brought PhD. students Elizabeth Munz to explain the research goals; Kristi Wilkum to relate interviews of some of the mothers; and Suzi D'Enbeau to share parts of staff interviews.
