PROGRAM:

ROB GALBRAITH introduced Dr. Timothy L. Ratliff, Director, Purdue Cancer Center who talk was titled "The Purdue Cancer Center: Leading the Fight Against Cancer". After testing our observational skills (most of us failed or declined to participate) Dr. Ratliff shared that ten million cases of cancer are diagnosed each year world-wide; 1.5 million in the U.S.; and that will increase 50% in the next 20 years. Every 3 seconds a new case is diagnosed in the U.S., resulting in a death every 5 seconds. The Purdue Cancer Center was established in 1976 and received a National Cancer Institute designation in 1978. Six schools (specialists) work together focused on cancer. The first Phase II Clinical Trial is about to begin in Lafayette, with eleven more compounds headed toward clinical trials as a result of the center's research.
