PROGRAM:

ROB GALBRAITH introduced Lilly Marsh, president of Artists' Own, who shared her personal mission statement "As artist has a two fold purpose: to honestly and with as much skill as possible express the inner self, and to offer these expressions to others. The first alone is selfish and indulgent; the second alone is merely commercialism. In combination, they are the highest and best expression of the human soul. My goal is to practice my craft with as much skill as possible, to manifest my inner understandings as honestly as I am given, to teach my skills and to be responsive to my community." because it parallels the mission statement of Rotary. She dispelled the mythical picture of artists as poverty stricken loners, working in a dirty attic, creating masterpieces that only rarified aficionados understand. She went on to describe the interaction between artists and their communities and the local co-op known as Artists' Own. The gallery helps local artists contribute to community organizations and institutions by engaging with society. They thrive on an energetic community. Partners in Artists' Own must not only be good artists, they must invest in the shop, work a specified number of hours a month and serve on a committee.
