PROGRAM:
JACK KELLEY introduced Dr. Shannon Oates, an Arnett physician and daughter of JACK and LETA, who shared her visit to the IU/Kenya Program at Eldoret, Kenya. The partnership between IU and Kenyans began in 1989 when HIV- AIDS was rampant and there were no survival stories. New drug therapies began saving many lives, but the crumpled social structure was incapable of sustaining these lives. Nutrition, farming techniques, trade workshops and employment are areas that increase the success of the people of Eldoret. Our District has adopted this project for a matching grant. It takes about $300 per person per year to provide the medications and education. Dr. Oates' personal experience with this project helps us understand the importance of Rotary's role in it's success. |
