PROGRAM:

JOHN SANDERSON introduced Dr. Jeremy Straughn, Asst. Professor of Sociology at Purdue who asked, "What does it mean to be American?" Or "Who do we think WE are?" There are three possible models, Civic, Cultural and Ethnic. Depending on who you ask, each could be considered most important when asked, "What does it take to be truly American?" He proceeded to share the results of a survey he conducted. Most everyone agrees that citizenship, speaking English, and pledging allegiance to the country are important attributes of being an American.
