GORDON COPPOC thanked all those who are helping with the Inbound GSE
team, due to arrive in two weeks. In preparation for this team from Bangladesh,
Purdue Assistant Professor of History, Tithi Bhattacharya, brought us up to
speed on the history of that country since 1947. At a glance: It was the East part
of Pakistan until rebellion and independence in 1971; small in area, 8th largest
population in the world; extremely fertile land, flooded by two great rivers; 1975
coup ended democracy and established Islam as basis of nationhood.
Bangladesh has one of the lowest GDP in the world; the highest malnutrition;
very high death rate of children younger than 5 years. There are two classes of
society, very rich and very poor.
