ANNOUNCEMENTS:


• SUSAN HYCHKA gave an update on the Centennial Project and encouraged members who have not already contributed, to help our Club reach $35,000 to make the Wabash River Overlook a reality for the whole community.

ROTARY FACT:

On August 14, 2004 in Nairobi, KENYA, Kenya's Vice President Hon. Moody Awori led the dedication of 15 homes designed to house 150 orphans whose parents have died of AIDS. These homes were built in Cura Village, Kiambu District, near Nairobi, to help address one of the greatest problems of the AIDS crisis - the care of children orphaned by the disease.

Ten Rotary clubs in Nairobi helped raise more than $62,000 and will help to educate the AIDS orphans. Along with Rotarians area church leaders will manage the Cura homes. This project is one of the largest community-based and privately funded HIV/AIDS orphan care initiatives in Kenya. It will serve as a model for Rotary club projects aimed at addressing similar needs in impoverished communities across Africa. Cost of construction was paid by the Nairobi clubs, other Rotary clubs throughout Africa and The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International making it the largest pan-African project of its kind in the world of Rotary.

PROGRAM:

MIKE PIGGOTT introduced Terry Wilson, President and CEO of Greater Lafayette Health Services.

Mr. Wilson presented his vision for GLHS in four sections, 1. The Mission, 2. Challenges the hospitals face, 3. Opportunities and 4. Priorities. He stated that the Mission drove all processes. The mission is to serve the community and the people with the best health care possible. He noted that hospitals are big business and that is a fact of life. In the most recent Community Benefits Report he said the hospitals generated 50 million dollars in benefits for the community.

Mr. Wilson listed change, facilities, competition, physician relations and cost to be the biggest challenges. Opportunities listed included invest in information technology, replace or renovate facilities, help to educate local business on value and service along with cost, and physician relations. The current priorities for GLHS are reduce cost, improve quality, safety, physician relations, and service. At the conclusion Mr. Wilson answered questions from the audience.

PRESIDENT TOM'S WISDOM:

Most people desire quick attention, response and service when facing hospital encounters and many other facets of their life.

The following was recorded by someone who wanted quick service:

"One night, a few co-workers at the computer data center where I work stayed late and we all started to get hungry. We decided to order in food by phone, but our boss thought that, since we work with computers, it would be more appropriate to order by Internet. After we contacted a fast food chain's web site and spent a long time registering as new customers for the delivery service, a message appeared on the screen: "'Thank you for your business. You will be able to order food in three days.'"
