CLUB CONCERNS

PRESIDENT DAVE BOUGH, requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: JOHN and EUDORA MC KEE; ED PAGE; FAE SPURLOCK; BEV STONE; Marjorie spouse of DICK WALKER, SANDY GRABOWSKI who had surgery, JERRY MC CARTHY who had surgery, and JOHN DE CAMP. It was good to see RICK SCWARZ and KEN DECKER back at Rotary today.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The sign-up sheet for Bell Ringing for Salvation Army on Saturday, December 14th is available. Sign up for one of the remaining 22 two-hour shifts.

Small Group Dinner Holiday Open House in JANE TURNER'S home on Thursday, December 12th at 6:00. Please make reservations with MARTHA CHISCON. Cost is $8.00 per person.

VICKI MAYES has called a Vocational Service Committee meeting after the regular meeting on December 17th.

BILL HATFIELD needs hosts for GSE team members from South Africa who will be visiting us in April. Please contact him if you can help.

  • Rotarian John Allen - team leader. Retired CEO of the Port Elizabeth Community Chest. (Jim Klusman has indicated an interest in hosting him but will check with his wife before committing).
  • Tim Marshall - Age 27, single, B. Com. Majors Industrial & Organizational Psychology and Business Management. Youth Pastor, Fraternal Methodist Church. Studying for Diploma in Theology.
  • Annali Erasmus - Age 34, single, BA Law, worked way thru college on Tennis scholarship, Has her own legal practice in Uitenhage (near Port Elizabeth, SA)
  • Joubert Tetief - Age 32, married one 2 year old son, BA, BED, HDE, high school teacher of history and geography.
  • Liesal Rudlan - Age 29, divorced, 5 year old daughter, BA Psychology and Sociology, Human Resources, Planning Consultant for Volkswagen of SA .

Responsibilities for hosting team members:

  • Pick up team member on arrival and receive him/her as a guest in your home for 4 days.
  • Include your guest in family activities.
  • Provide breakfast and dinner. (Lunch will be provided by the people with whom the team member will have professional visits.)
  • Provide transportation to and from scheduled activities.
  • Learn about the team member's life, family, work, country, etc.and share yours with him/her.
  • Be a warm and welcoming Rotary host!

The Raffle for Eradicate Polio brought in $100.00 today. $50.00 goes to the Rotary International Eradicate Polio Fund, $25.00 went to the winning ticket number (and since that person did not claim it the money went to Eradicate Polio) and $25 was added to the kettle for the person who draws the Ace of Spades.

PROGRAM (December 3, 2002)

Ron Ellis of Endocyte was introduced by ELSA JANLE. He spoke to us about the development of drugs to cure cancer and perhaps autoimmune diseases. They are experimenting with folate to trick cancer cells into accepting drugs. This targeting agent helps prevent side effects and produces a more effective result.

STUDENT GUESTS: Craig Hodges and Kathleen Williamson from Jefferson High School were our student guests today. They received a certificate and a travel mug with the four-way test to commemorate their visit with us.
