PROGRAM (May 21, 2002)

PRESIDENT ELECT DAVID introduced KEN EWING, May Program Coordinator, who introduced Herm Haffner, Consultant/Trainer with Sales Mark, who made a most interesting presentation regarding communication; I have never seen as many Rotarians taking notes as today. Herm's premise was that in order to communicate well, one should figure out the style and fall into their style, and identified the following personality characteristics or styles of individual(s) of those one is communicating with. He proposed the D I S C approach to this identification of primary personality types:

  • D = Dominant (take control, no nonsense, start with conclusion, get things done, shoes unshined);
  • I = Interpersonal (fun and relationships networked, focus on relating and then tend to business, dress stylish, brighter colors, jewelry, and flair);
  • S = Salt of the Earth (steady and related to logic, engineers, move from chaos to order, dress casually, methodical all the way); and
  • C = Compliant (very detailed, take systems and look into the details, read and edit the fine print, dress in neutrals, want to blend, great workers, hate change).

Herm felt that 20% of the people are Dominant, 40% are Interpersonal, 20% are Compliant, and 20% are Steady. And, concluded that organizations should have a smattering of all, about 80% of the U S. population are combinations of D I S C. He concluded with a Q & A session, and requested that a contribution be made to the Lafayette Foundation in lieu of a brass Rotary Wheel.

THANK YOU LETTER from Wesley Jacks. I would like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank you for awarding me the $1,000.00 Eric A. Holm Scholarship at your meeting this past month. It was truly an honor for me to even be considered for the award, and the fact that the award was presented to me is still amazing. In addition to thanking you, I would like to inform you of my plans for higher education. Over the past few weeks I have weighed my options, and I have found that Wabash College fits the greatest number of my needs in a college. I wanted to let you know the scholarship you awarded me will be used towards my education at that institution. While at Wabash, I will try to maintain the qualities set forth by the Rotary Club as exemplary. Thank you once again for this great honor. Wesley Jacks (William Henry Harrison Senior).

THANK YOU CARD to BETTY SUDDARTH FROM FAYE FIELDS, spouse of BOB. Just a note to thank you and the Lafayette Rotary Club for a most entertaining evening. It was just as advertised - an evening of good food, inspiring music, and warm hospitality. So much appreciation for the evening - and the lovely carnation which reminds me of BOB's years of Rotary association. Thanks and best wishes. Faye Fields
