Volume 87, Number 36 - March 12, 2002

REGULAR CLUB MEETING ON TUESDAY, MARCH 26, 2002 will be at the Ivy Tech State College campus (The new Ivy Hall and Ivy Tech-Tippecanoe County Library). There will be no Club meeting at the University Inn Conference Center and Suites. Box lunches will be provided by University Inn and soda provided by Ivy Tech. The cost will be the same as for the usual buffet - $8.00 per person. After the regular meeting Ivy Tech Co-hosts BETTY DOVERSBERGER and JOHN SANDERSON will have students lead guided tour of the new Ivy Hall and the new Ivy Tech-Tippecanoe County Library. GRIFF needs to make a guarantee to University Inn (a show of hands will be asked for at the March 19th meeting); therefore, if you plan to have guests, please call him at 494-7218 Office or 474-5596 - Residence. And, if a box lunch does not suit you, we are sorry as that is all there will be there to eat. Maps will be available at Secretary's table at next meeting, March 19th.

UPCOMING PROGRAM (March 19, 2002)

Jack L. Kelley, M. D., will tell about his "Medical Mission Trip to Kaposoar Kenya AFRICA." Dr. Kelley will be introduced by either CHRISTA KECK or DAVID FILMER, Program Coordinators for March.

PROGRAM (March 12, 2002)

PRESIDENT OSCAR introduced BILL HATFIELD, who in turn introduced Randall Shepard, Chief Justice, Indiana Supreme Court who made a most interesting presentation regarding three approaches to criminal justice,

  • Criminal court (judges now have various alternatives for dealing with offenders, particularly young offenders);
  • Courts deal with dysfunctional families (divorces, disolutions, etc. where children are involved - now courts have recruited and trained volunteers who articulate what is best for the child); and
  • Assist people who have trouble getting access to law due to lack of funds (last 18 months have organized attorneys who are willing to give time to represent this type of situation).

Chief Justice Shepard closed with a Q & A session.

CENTRAL CATHOLIC HIGH SCHOOL GUESTS: BETH RIDDELL and BRIAN KING, hosted by SUSAN SMITH. PRESIDENT OSCAR noted that recognition certificate would be mailed to each, and brochures about Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships, and a Rotary Travel Mug (4-Way Test on it) were presented to Beth and Brian.

VISITORS: Les Meade, Attorney, guest of BOB FEUER; Joe Bumbleburg, Attorney, guest of GORDON KINGMA; and John Meyers, attorney, guest of LINA REEVES-KERNER; and Sherm Kessler, former Purdue Trustee and farmer from New Ross, IN, guest of GRIFF.

CLUB CONCERNS

SHOTS NOT SPOTS IMMUNIZATION DRIVE FOR KINDERGARTENERS AND FIRST GRADERS: FRITZ COHEN, Chair, Community Service Projects Committee (Committee) announced today that the next immunization drive is scheduled for Tuesday, March 26, 2002, Tippecanoe County Fair Grounds (Home Economics Building) and that 16 volunteers are needed for the follow time slots: 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. - three volunteers needed; 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. - Three volunteers needed, have three (MARIELLEN NEUDECK; BOB ADAMS; and BILL PAPE); and 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. - Need five volunteers, have none. Signup sheet will be available on the Bulletin Board at the Tuesday, March 19th regular Club meeting.

GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE (GSE) OPPORTUNITY: GSE Team from District 920 (LESOTHO and SOUTH AFRICA scheduled to arrive here on Sunday, April 22, 2002 and leave for French Lick (District Conference) on Monday, April 26, 2002. The GSE Team members and vocations are as follows: Mike Frudd, Co Team leader (male), retired professional accountant, married and has two adult daughters; Menzintando Maboyi, the other Co Team leader, is male, single; and a lawyer; Chiara Chiumya (female, single, one child age 4, and a bank inspector); Ingrid Landman (female, single and medicine); Tawery Gladys Moyana (female, single and a Lawyer). PLEASE NOTE: ANNUAL DINNER COMMITTEE MEETINGS: BETTY SUDDARTH, Vice President and Chair, Annual Dinner Committee has scheduled meetings for this Committee for the following Tuesdays: March 19th, April 16th, and April 30th. Meetings will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the Tailgate Lounge, University Inn. DISTRICT 6560 CONFERENCE, April 26, 27, and 28, 2002 at French Lick, IN. The Conference will be with District 6580 (Southern third of the State). Registration forms and other information will be available at the Secretary's table. For the past several years the Conference has been held in the District, but this year it will be at French Lick. Overnight rooms at the French Lick Hotel are $89.00 and a block of rooms will be held for the Conference until March 15th, 2002.
