UPCOMING PROGRAM (March 5, 2002)

David L. Sigman, Head of Visual and Performing Arts and Associate Professor of Visual and Performing Arts, Purdue, will tell about the new Visual and Performing Arts Building that is being built. Prof. Sigman came to Purdue in 1958; Prof. Sigman has a B. F. A. degree (1970 from Kansas City Art Institute), a M. F. A. degree (1979) from Syracuse. He will be introduced by CHRISTIANE KECK, Program Coordinator for March.

PROGRAM (February 26, 2002)

PRESIDENT OSCAR introduced Joe Bumbleburg, Ivy Tech State College Board Representative from this area, and Chair, Ivy Tech State College Board, who in turn introduced BETTY DOVERSBERGER, Chancellor, Ivy Tech State College, who made a most interesting presentation with power point assistance of JOHN SANDERSON. BETTY noted that in 1968 when Indiana Vocational Technical College started, they offered just plain steak, could not offer courses in communications, mathematics, education or work in group courses. But now can they "sizzle" in the steak, i.e., transfer degrees; graduate level education courses; programs of higher technological levels; programs designed to meet the needs of area employers. BETTY also noted that now: 1) there is a Business Division; 2) a Health Division; 3) enrollments are up 41%; 85% of graduates stay in the community; 12% of graduates stay in IN; and new Ivy Hall offers many state�of �the arts facilities, i.e., 250 seat auditorium with each seat wired with power and data; several open computer labs; enhanced elaborate assessment center; learning resource center; and multi purpose meeting rooms. BETTY and JOHN closed with a Q and A session and requested that in lieu of a Rotary wheel, that a contribution be made to the Foundation. The Club was also invited to meet at the new facility and take a guided tour. The Vocational Committee may be working on this.

INDIANA BUSINESS COLLEGE (IBC) GUEST: Jennifer Walters, guest of the Club and hosted and introduced by GREG REGER, Director, IBC. President OSCAR presented a certificate of recognition and a "Rotary Travel Mug (4-Way Test on it) to Jennifer.

GROUP STUDY EXCHANGE (GSE) OPPORTUNITY: GSE Team from District 920 (LESOTHO and SOUTH AFRICA scheduled to arrive here on Sunday, April 22, 2002 and leave for French Lick (District Conference) on Monday, April 26, 2002. The GSE Team members and vocations are as follows: Mike Frudd, Co Team leader (male), retired professional accountant, married and has two adult daughters; Menzintando Maboyi, the other CoTeam leader, is male, single; and a lawyer; Chiara Chiumya (female, single, one child age 4, and a bank inspector); Ingrid Landman (female, single and medicine); Tawery Gladys Moyana (female, single and a Lawyer). JEAN JACKSON and LINA REEVES-KERNER, Co-Chairs, GSE Committee are requesting the following assistance: 1) Rotarian homes for these team members; 2) Van (luggage) and vehicle for transportation on April 22nd and to French Lick (District Conference) on April 26th. ANNOUNCEMENTS

MEMBERSHIP PROPOSALS: JANE TURNER, Membership Education & Information Committee, today conducted a new member Information Session. Six candidates expressed an interest in becoming members of the Club: Shawn Borga, Sign Experts, proposer BOB FEUER; John Corey, Retired President Lafayette Savings Bank, proposer LIZ SOLBERG; Bill Kealy, Stuart & Branigin, proposer STEVE PENNELL; Sally K. Frost Mason, Provost, Purdue, proposer PHIL SWAIN; and Ronda J. Walsh Schwab, Edward D. Jones Representative, proposer, GRIFF. If no written objections are received within seven days and Rotary committee selection sheet is completed, all will be eligible for introduction to the Club on or after March 5th.

SMALL GROUP DINNER on Thursday, March 14th, at JIM and MARINA FUNK's condo; 7:00 p.m. drinks and tidbits. Then walk to Mocha Caf� for family-style dinner. Contact JANE TURNER or MARTHA CHISCON if you are interested. Cost is $8.00 per person.

SINGING FOR GREATER LAFAYETTE (SGFL): DAVID BOUGH, President-elect and Chair, SGFL, would like to complete the SGFL project for 2002. He would like to have a post concert evaluation meeting immediately after the Club meeting on Tuesday, March 5, 2002, Tailgate Lounge, University Inn Conference Center and Suites. He would like SGFL Committee members, a representative from the Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO), and Cumberland Place Exhibition Center, as well as Rotarians who attended the event to discuss and evaluate for next year. PLEASE ATTEND THIS IMPORTANT MEETING.

ANNUAL DINNER COMMITTEE MEETINGS: BETTY SUDDARTH, Vice President and Chair, Annual Dinner Committee has scheduled meetings for this Committee for the following Tuesdays: March 19th, April 16th, and April 30th. Meetings will be held at 1:00 p.m. in the Tailgate Lounge, University Inn. Committee members include: BRIAN BREED (or PMO Representative); LEONA COHEN; JIM HANKS; JAN GRIFFIN-KOEHLER; DALE MC HENRY; KATHY MEEKS; ERIC MURPHY, GREG NAPIER; PARKIE PARKHURST; BARRIE SIMPSON; STEVE STUCKEY; AND PAUL ZIEMER.

DISTRICT 6560 CONFERENCE, April 26, 27, and 28, 2002 at French Lick, IN. The Conference will be with District 6580 (Southern third of the State). Registration forms and other information will be available at the Secretary's table. For the past several years the Conference has been held in the District, but this year it will be at French Lick. Overnight rooms at the French Lick Hotel are $89.00 and a block of rooms will be held for the Conference until March 15th, 2002.

LAFAYETTE ROTARY CLUB "SERVICE ABOVE SELF" VOCATIONAL SERVICE AWARD NOMINATION FORMS may be obtained from ELSA JANLE, Member "Vocational Service Award Committee"; and available from other Committee members (STAN MITHOEFER, Chair; ELSA JANLE; JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER; TOM SCHMIDT; and JENNIFER SHANAHAN; or at Secretary's table).

VOCATIONAL SCHOLARSHIPS: TOM SCHMIDT, Chair, Vocational Scholarships Committee, has forwarded letters and four copies of the Vocational Scholarship application form to BETTY DOVERSBERGER, Chancellor, Ivy Tech State College, and GREG REGER, Executive Director, Indiana Business College stating, "The Lafayette Rotary Club, through their continuing generosity to students in our community, is offering scholarships for vocational students. Four scholarships of $400.00 each will be awarded on Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at the noon meeting of the Club." These scholarships will be given to students from Ivy Tech State College and Indiana Business College. An application copy, if desired, may be acquired from either TOM or GRIFF.
