PROGRAM (January 8, 2002)

PRESIDENT OSCAR introduced DAVID BOUGH, who in turn introduced Prof. Judith Myers-Walls who made a most interesting presentation about talking to children about terrorism. Prof. Myers-Walls noted that: a) Kids know more than you think; b) Reassure them; c) Be available; d) Say how you feel/share your feelings, i.e., tell young people if you feel afraid, angry, or frustrated, it can help them to know that others also are upset by these events; e) Realize their fears support children's concerns for people they do not know; f) Be aware of other emotions - look for feelings beyond fear. After reassuring kids, don't stop there. Studies have shown that children also may feel sad or angry. Let them express that full range of emotions. Support the development of caring and empathy. Be careful not to encourage the kind of response given by one child: "I don't care if there's a war, as long as it doesn't affect me and my family."; g) Get back to routine re-establish routine as soon as possible; h) Find emotional outlets to help children, use creative outlets like art and music to express their feelings; i) Help them take action - one important way to reduce stress is to take action; and j) Take action yourself, too. Prof. Myers-Walls closed by indicating that it is important for adults and children to know how to relate to someone with whom we do not agree; with a Q & A session; and requested that a contribution be made to the Foundation in her name rather than receiving a Rotary Wheel.
