UPCOMING PROGRAM (December 4, 2001)

MARK DAVIS, December Program Coordinator, has arranged in cooperation with GARY SUISMAN for the three Journal and Courier sports reporters to be the program. GARY will introduce Mike Carmin, Tom Kubat, Jeff Washburn, and act as a panel moderator.

NOTE: The December 4th meeting agenda will be extremely tight; what with some important Club business items; therefore, President OSCAR HOPKINS may "ring the bell", to start the meeting earlier than usual:

  1. Introduction of new members;
  2. December Birthday table;
  3. Club election - slate of Club positions beginning July 1, 2002: Secretary - GRIFF; Treasurer - ERNIE POLAND; Assistant Treasurer - JOHN TROTT; Vice President - TOM SCHMIDT; Director - Lafayette Rotary Foundation (five-year term) - STEVE THOMPSON; Town Directors (three-year terms) - JOHN SANDERSON and LINA REEVES-KERNER; Gown Directors (Three-year terms) - JOHN HUIE and CHRISTA KECK. This slate was accepted by the Club Board at its meeting on Monday, November 13th. Also, this slate shall be approved by the membership in attendance according to Roberts Rules of Order appropriate for such action at the first regular Club meeting); and
  4. Annual Meeting of the Lafayette Rotary Foundation, Inc., Chaired by STEVE THOMPSON, President.

PLEASE NOTE; This week's "Ripples" will be bulk mailed to every Rotarian to enclose a Salvation Army "Bell Ringing" envelope to assist individuals to make contributions to the Salvation Army. The mailing will be one or two days late as "Ripples" will not be taken to the Post Office until Friday because the envelopes will not be available until that day. However, "Ripples" will still be on CHRIS FUNK'S web site at the normal time.

CLUB CONCERNS

Prior to the invocation today, President OSCAR HOPKINS requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: DOUG BRANIGIN; JOHN and EUDORA MC KEE; ED PAGE; FAE SPURLOCK; and HARLAND WHITE.  

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors- JIM HOBBS 11:15 to 11:45.m., and ERNIE POLAND, 11:45 p.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Greeter - CHRISTA KECK; Invocation - JOHN OSMUN; Music - JOHN BARRETT; and High School Guests (CENTRAL CATHOLIC) hosted by GIL SATTERLY.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

DECEMBER SMALL GROUP DINNER: Christmas Open House at the home of OSCAR and BEVERLY HOPKINS, Thursday, December 13th, 2001. A maximum of 40 can be accommodated, and 23 have already signed-up, so please get your reservation and $8.00 per person to MARTHA CHISCON as quickly as possible.

TWO COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS: FIRST ONE: FRITZ COHEN, Chair Community Service Projects Committee (Committee) announced - Our Club will again pack and deliver gift boxes for the local Women's Shelter Christmas project, Date, Time, and place for packing boxes: Friday, December 7, 2001, from 9:00 a.m. to approximately 11:30 a.m. at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1005 North 21st Street, Lafayette (NOT at the Women's Shelter as in previous years.) 15 to 17 Rotarian volunteers are needed. Delivery of gift boxes: Saturday, December 8, 2001, beginning at 12:30 p.m. UNTIL APPROXIMATELY 4:00 P.M. PICKUP POINT IS AT THE HOLY TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH. Volunteers with suitable vehicles (pickups or vans) are still needed � those who have signed-up: LEW RUNNELS; GRIFF; and AL and MARTHA CHISCON. Drivers will be accompanied by high-school volunteers, who will do the heavy lifting. A sign-up sheet will be posted. Still need more volunteers � Those who have signed-ups: Al and MARTHA CHISCON; FRITZ and LEONA COHEN; KEN EWING; JIM FOSTER; PHIL KLINGER; KEVIN O'BRIEN; PAUL POST; FRANCIS PRITSCHER; BARB REIF; LEW RUNNELS and JOHN TROTT. Makeup credits are available.

SECOND ONE: The Community Service Projects Committee invites Rotary members to make a connection with our veterans at the Indiana Veterans Home through volunteer and Service learning opportunities. Sign up and work according to your availability. Persons are needed to help with correspondence, reading, computer assistance, recreation, and other activities. PROGRAM (November 27, 2001)

PRESIDENT OSCAR introduced DAVE BOUGH, Chair, Program Committee, who in turn introduced John Waling, President and CEO, Greater Lafayette Health Care Services (HCS). John made a most interesting presentation regarding HCS and its functions - a) Co-own, Co-manage, and Co-govern the two hospitals (Home and St. Elizabeth Medical Center; b) own and operate ambulatory and surgery center at Home Hospital, and objectives. - a) become a grant making organization ,i.e., currently have $100 million in assets and hope to make approximately $5 millions worth of grants per year for long term help in the community.. HCS has already made grants in excess of $3/4 million to Camp Tecumseh (125,000 challenge grant to build a new infirmary), YMCA, Midland Meal Services (Lafayette Rotary Foundation has also made a grant to Midland Meal Services), Foodfinders; and Tippecanoe County Health Department. HCS's major objective is to share the wealth of the past with the future. John, again requested that in lieu of a Rotary wheel that a contribution be made by the Club to the Lafayette Rotary Foundation, Inc.
