UPCOMING PROGRAM (February 27, 2001)

TWELVTH ANNUAL "SERVICE ABOVE SELF" VOCATIONAL SERVICE AWARD presentation of the Vocational Projects Committee (Committee), TOM SCHMIDT, Chair, will be the major portion of the program. The Committee has met and selected an individual from the Greater Lafayette Community as a recipient: Dan Taylor, Director, Trinity Mission.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - DON GENTRY, 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., and JANE TURNER, 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Greeter - ROB MILLER; Invocation – SUSAN KISINGER; Music - DAVE LUHMAN; and No High School Guests.

CLUB CONCERNS

Prior to the invocation today, President DAN TEDER (President DAN) requested members/spouses to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: BOB HIATT; REX KEPLER; JOHN MC KEE; CAROL REW, spouse of CARL; FAE SPURLOCK; BEV STONE; and ROSEMARY TEDER (ROSEMARY is now home), spouse of LAWRENCE and mother of DAN.

VICKI SPURLOCK called last Wednesday, February 14th, to report that FAE was back in Home Hospital, this is the third time in three weeks. He has had multiple complications since triple by-pass heart surgery on Sunday, December 10, 2000 in Chattanooga, TN. His current problem is an ulcerated sore on ankle that is bleeding. VICKI reported that he was in good spirits. FAE was in Room #2340, Home Hospital, and would appreciate cards; if not there, address them to home address at 2313 Carmel Drive, West Lafayette, 47906.

NOTICE: In doing some space clean-up/out, came across three items that might be of interest to someone: (1) "Value-Added Selling Time-Tested Strategies for Turning Prospects into Partners", six cassettes, Jack & Garry Kinder; (2) "Secrets of Successful Insurance Sales", six cassettes, Jack & Garry Kinder; and (3) "Keeping It All In The Family - An Estate Conservation Seminar", video and cassette, 1995 Prosperity Productions. If interested contact GRIFF within a few days, or they are gone!

JOHN HUIE (JOHN) with classification EDUCATION—University-Administration-Special Assistant to the President, was introduced by his sponsor OSCAR HOPKINS. JOHN and his spouse of 40 years, EMILY, are the parents of two children and reside at 1380 Fawn Ridge Drive, West Lafayette 47906-4756 - telephone 743-9007. JOHN was formerly a Rotarian, but extensive responsibilities for State Relations for Purdue in Indianapolis necessitated resigning on April 30, 1993. JOSEPH MICON (JOE) with classification SOCIAL SERVICE ORGANIZATIONS & INSTITUTIONS—Lafayette Urban Ministry, was introduced by his sponsor, CHRIS JOHANNSEN. JOE and his spouse of 17 years, JO, are the parents of two children, and reside at 6806 Armstrong Chapel Road (just inside the Warren County line), West Lafayette 47906-8006 - telephone 583-4300. JO MICON is an Alcohol and Other Drugs Counselor with office in the Student Health Center, Purdue, West Lafayette. JOE is Executive Director, Lafayette Urban Ministry (also President, Warren County Council), with office at 525 North 4th Street, Lafayette 47901 – telephone 423-2691.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

AMBASSADORIAL SCHOLARS COMMITTEE (Committee) NOTICE: TERRY WEST, Co-Chair, announced that completed applications from our candidates are due on February 22nd at 5:00 p.m. and personal interviews for finalists are scheduled for Saturday a.m., March 3rd from 8:30 a.m. until Noon. TERRY plans to notify the applicants on February 27th whether or not they will be invited to the personal interviews on March 3rd.

"SINGING FOR GREATER LAFAYETTE" (Co-chaired by DAVE LUHMAN and BOB GRIFFITHS), the annual cooperative effort on the part of Rotary and the Purdue Musical Organizations (PMO) to raise money for a community project is scheduled for Saturday, March 24, 2001 at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. This will be Rotary's only fund raising event for the year and it will be in support of Lafayette Habitat for Humanity. Marketing (Co-chairs BOB BROCK and JERRY COLE); Sponsors (Chair, DON GENTRY); and Promotion (Co-chairs, DICK HOLTZ and JIM HANKS) Subcommittees are already functioning. Sponsor signup sheets, canary yellow, have been at tables the last few meetings, sponsor donations/contributions must be in by Tuesday, March 6th , should individuals/companies wish to have their names listed in the program. Ticket purchasing opportunities are also now available, order with money should be forwarded to BOB BROCK, JERRY COLE, or GRIFF. Please mark this date on your calendar and plan to support this effort.

PROGRAM (February 20, 2001)

President DAN introduced DON GENTRY, February Program Coordinator, who noted that February programs were to be about Purdue University, The Land Grant University of the Twenty First Century - "The Engaged University" in three major arenas: (1) Engagement, which he covered on February 6th; (2) Discovery, last week by Prof. Bashir; and today (3) Learning, covered by Dr. Gary Bertoline, Head, Department of Computer Graphics, whom he introduced. Dr. Bertoline made a most interesting presentation about the Purdue Digital Enterprise Center and the use of digital graphics in the future. A set of slide information utilized by Dr. Bertoline is available.

VISITING ROTARIANS: Ann Boehning and Stuart Boehning, Daybreak.

JEFFERSON HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS: Melissa House and Andrew Martin were guests of the Club and hosted/introduced by BARB DOSTER. President DAN presented certificates of recognition, information brochures about Ambassadorial Scholarships for future reference, and Rotary travel mugs (Four-Way Test on them) to Melissa and Andrew.
