LAFAYETTE ROTARY CLUB AND SALVATION ARMY LONG-TERM RELATIONSHIP

The Lafayette Rotary has enjoyed a long and well deserved reputation for service, leadership, and generosity to the community. This can be no better highlighted than the club's very active support of the Salvation Army's Annual Christmas Campaign.

The "special relationship" with the Salvation Army dates back to at least 1932 where there is an item in the annual history about Rotarians ringing the bells and manning red kettles. This commitment has grown over the years and, from a monetary as well as manpower aspect, remains a prime community service project to the club. During the 1999 Christmas Campaign, Rotarians (some 96 members, families and friends) manned twelve community sites and collected a record kettle contribution of $6,304. Additionally, club members also contributed $14,827˜also an all-time high.

Local Rotarians have provided valuable service and leadership as members of the Salvation Army's Advisory Board. Supporting the Corps Commander (Rotarian Major Bob Meyer), are the following current/former board members:

  • Bob Brock, John Carpenter, Howie Diesslin, Dennis Dunn, Don Gustafson, Ed Hemmer, Chuck Horner, Jerry McCarthy and Barb Hansen.

The Salvation Army led the 1999 national survey of the top 400 charities for the eighth straight year. Management guru Peter Drucker calls the Salvation Army "by far the most effective organization in the U.S. No one even comes close to it in respect to clarity of mission, ability to innovate, measurable results, dedication and putting money to maximum use." When it comes to measuring results, it has one of the highest performance rates at the lowest cost.

The annual Christmas Campaign nets about $190,000, which in some large measure supports a "full service" social service program throughout the year that includes:

  • Crisis assistance to the needy ˆ over 2,000 families a year helped with clothing, housing costs (rent/utility assistance), medications and transportation.
  • The county's only 24 hour Family Emergency Shelter (16 bed capacity)
  • Seasonal programs:
    o Christmas assistance
    o Winter coats/jackets/boots
    o Summer camp for youths
    o Back-to-school items
  • Referral Services
  • Employment and financial counseling
  • Community Volunteer Opportunities:
    o Year-round food pantry
    o Clothing room
    o Bell ringing

The Salvation Army is indeed most grateful for Rotary's continued support and is committed to the judicious use of monies so generously contributed by the Lafayette community.
