Katie Gaff and Amy Sarah, Seniors in the Department of Foods and Nutrition, Purdue, will make a presentation entitled "Don't Balloon Up � Healthful Holiday Eating." This is Katie's and Amy's outside community presentation for F & N 424 � Communication in Foods and Nutrition; it will be a food demonstration with samples at the end of their presentation. Katie and Amy will be introduced by KIRK CLARK, Program Coordinator for the month of December.

BILL ANDREWS back to Rotary today after his gall bladder surgery � it was good to see him up and around.

DENNIS DUNN ("Leader" picture) presented Sagamore of the Wabash certificate, IN's highest award, from State Representative Sheila Klinker on behalf of Governor Frank L. O'Bannon, recognizing his community leadership and his role in helping establish the Museums At Prophetstown.

YWCA's ANNUAL WOMEN'S SHELTER HOLIDAY PROJECT scheduled for Friday, December 15th, Saturday, December 16th, and Sunday, December 17th. Sign up sheet will be at Rotary meetings � need: Ten (10) volunteers are needed for December 15th, from 9:00 � 11:00 a.m. to pack boxes with packages of food items. Three (3) volunteers, with vehicles, i.e, pickup trucks or vans, for December 16th and 17th, from 1:00 � 4:00 p.m., to deliver the boxes. Each driver will be accompanied by a helper, who will load, unload, and deliver the boxes to the residences. Please volunteer to help by signing up or by calling FRITZ COHEN or LEW RUNNELS.

BELL RINGING Envelopes FOR INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE SALVATION ARMY ARE INCLUDED WITH THIS MAILING OF "RIPPLES." "Bell Ringing" will be on Saturday, December 16th, at the same ten sites as last year � this translates into the need for 96 Rotarians, family, friends, etc. to be bell ringers at the Salvation Army kettles. JERRY MC CARTHY will have the sign up sheet at the meetings each Tuesday until December 12th. Jerry has also furnished some material describing a) Lafayette Rotary Club and Salvation Army Long-Term Relationship, b) History of Rotary Financial Support to the Salvation Army and c) Salvation Army Bell Ringer Contributions by Site. SMALL GROUP DINNER: JANE TURNER has scheduled a heavy hors d'oeuvre and Holiday drinks for Wednesday, December 13th, at her residence, 1304 Columbia Street, Lafayette, from 6:00 p.m. until the last Rotarian/spouse/special other leave. Cost is $8.00 per person, maximum of 25-30, and reservations need to be in to GRIFF by Tuesday, December 5th; better hurry as GRIFF already has 17 reservations.

BOARD MEETINGS

NOTES FROM CLUB, Monday, November 13th, and FOUNDATION, Wednesday, November 15th, BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS:

Club Board: (1) Corrected minutes of the Monday, October 9th meeting were approved; (2) DALE MC HENRY, Treasurer, reviewed the "Cash Receipts and Disbursements Summary Report for October"; Dues billed on October 1st for 11/1/00-4/30/01 have not been paid by 90 Rotarians as of October 31st, reminder statements sent; In response to a request by President TEDER regarding contributions to PolioPlus, noted that October contributions included 19 contributions for $1,654.00 to The Rotary International Foundation (RIF) PolioPlus Fund, four additional contributions for $1,300.00 undesignated to RIF, and five new member contributions of $10.00 each (members contributed a total of $3,004.00 to RIF in October); Members contributed $704.00 in October to the Lafayette Rotary Foundation (LRF), all unrestricted except a $100.00 contribution designated to the Salvation Army; and Comparable numbers for October 1999 were 36 contributions for $1,457.00 to RIF and three contributions for $210.00 to LRF, in each case including one new member $10.00 contribution; (3) Pending approval by the Membership Selection & Classification and Membership Education Information Committees, approved membership proposals of Angel Hernandez and Clifford Wojtalewicz; and approved Elaine Ellison's; Marne Helgesen's, and Timothy Luzader's request to transfer from Daybreak, Urbana, IL, and Stony Brook, NY; (4) Recommended to the LRF Board the funding, $500.00, to the Boy Scouts of America, Sagamore Council to fund one half of the expense of one Scout to attend the 15th National Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill, VA; (5) Task Force reported that it is surveying other Big Ten Rotary Clubs, of similar size, regarding their model for the Secretary/Executive Director position; (6) BOB GARRISON, Chair, Membership Retention Committee, presented a sample letter and survey for the purpose of surveying new members for ideas on how to contemporize, i.e., attract younger members, the Club, suggestions were made and requested to be presented at the December meeting; (7) MARK RUSSELL, Chair, Scholarship & Citizenship Committee (Committee), reported that the Committee and high school counselors recommended (a) Clarify the citizenship category by, accepting nominees academically in the top quartile of their class, but once eligible, eliminate transcript, GPA and rank, SAT/ACT, and five points criteria from document and increase "Goals/Special Talents" to 25 points out of 1000, (b) Allow counselors to nominate one scholarship and one citizenship nominee regardless of gender; and (c) Increase eight Thomas F. Moran Scholarship $500.00 Awards to $750.00 each for an increase of $2,000.00 in total funding, these recommendations were approved (increase of the Thomas F. Moran Scholarships would need LRF approval); (8) JEAN JACKSON, Community Avenue of Service, reported that the YWCA Women's Shelter Christmas Project would be conducted December 15th, 16th, and 17th, Salvation Army Bell Ringing would be on Saturday, December 16th, and Veterans' Home Project still being investigated; (9) ROB GALBRAITH, International Avenue of Service, that Club via LINA REEVES-KERNER, Chair, Group Study Exchange (GSE) Committee, would be participating in the District's program for the inbound GSE Team from BRAZIL (District #4590); (10) BOB FEUER presented information regarding the selling of Rotary items, i.e., afghans, Four-Way Test items, golf shirts, Object of Rotary items, pen/pencil sets, short sleeve denim shirts, ties, etc. at Rotary meetings, prior to Christmas, Board felt it was a good idea, but time too short for this year; and (11) Approved canceling the Tuesday, January 2, 2001 Club meeting. Next Board meeting is December 11th.

Foundation Board: (1) Minutes of the Wednesday, October 11th meeting approved as distributed; (2) HOWARD DIESSLIN, Chair, Investment Committee distributed the LRF Annual Investment Report for the first three months � 7/1/00-9/30/00 and led a review/discussion of this Report; (3) Club Board's recommendations to: (a) Fund $500.00 to the Boy Scouts of America, Sagamore Council for one half of the expense of one scout to the 15th National Jamboree at Fort A. P. Hill, VA, and (b) Raise the eight Thomas F. Moran Scholarships from $500.00 each to $750.00 each, an increase of $2,000.00, were not approved due to the LRF's encumbrances for the 2000-2001 year ($2,156.00 for camperships; $5,000.00 to Museums of Prophetstown; $5,000.00 to the Long Center for the Performing Arts; $6,000.00 for scholarship and citizenship awards; and $1,400.00 for vocational scholarships) and decline of investment income; (4) President DAN reviewed the November Club Board meeting; (5) Voted to continue with the tents and transparency at each Club meeting to alert membership to work of the LRF; (6) Voted to request the Club Board for two program opportunities during each Rotary year, i.e., one at the LRF Annual Meeting, first Tuesday in October, and one in May each year. Next LRF Board meeting is December 13th.

PROGRAM (November 28, 2000)

President DAN introduced TERRY WEST, Co-Chair, Ambassadorial Scholars (Scholars) Committee (Committee) who made a most interesting presentation about the Committee and program (TERRY administers the out-bound portion and GORDY YOUNG, the other Co-chair, administers the in-bound portion): (1) Makeup which includes a representative from Daybreak, Zee Evans; (2) Listed current Scholars and Club's Host Counselors; (3) With slides, reviewed meetings and special functions with Scholars; (4) One scholarship for District #6560, maximum award of $23,000.00 (money comes from RIF based on District contributions); (5) Two out of the last three years the Club's candidate has been the winner; (6) Reviewed scholarship requirements and noted candidate cannot be child or grandchild of a Rotarian; and (6) Reviewed the key dates and activities of the Committee. TERRY then introduced Matt Williams who made a most interesting presentation, with picture transparencies, regarding his year as an Ambassadorial Scholar in HONG KONG.

VISITORS: Anna Teder, daughter of President DAN; Liz Hardy (Mortgage Loan Officer, Fifth Third Bank), guest of SANDY ALLENDE; Cara Carreon (Director of Marketing, Rosewalk Village), guest of FAYE COLE; Barbara Reif (Retired and former Rotarian, Peoria, IL), guest of MARGERY ISMAIL; Todd Wetzel (Director, Convocations and Lectures), guest BILL LOVELL; and Sherm Kessler (New Ross and former trustee of Ivy Tech State College and Purdue), guest of BETTY NELSON.

IVY TECH STATE COLLEGE GUEST: Keonn Williams, guest of the Club and hosted/introduced by JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER. Keonn is from Gary and moved here to enroll at Ivy Tech, is enrolled in Architectural Design, and works in the Admissions Office. A certificate and Rotary travel mug (Four-Way Test on it) will be mailed to Keonn.

SPECIAL GUESTS: Matt Williams, former Ambassadorial Scholar, sponsored by the Club, who just returned after one year in HONG KONG; Matt was also a speaker today; and Ambassadorial Scholars and their (Host Counselor): Masayoshi Shimo (TERRY WEST) from JAPAN; Dae-Young Kim (STEVE MOTT) and Wootae Jeong (TOM SCHMIDT) from REPUBLIC OF KOREA. Dae-Young Kim's spouse, Mi-Jin, was also a guest of the Club and introduced by STEVE.
