Ripples - November 14, 2000

Volume 85, Number 19 November 14, 2000

UPCOMING PROGRAM (November 21, 2000)

Tuesday, November 21, 2000 is the annual Rotary-Kiwanis Thanksgiving Week joint meeting; this year Rotary has program responsibility. JIM TURLEY, Program Coordinator for November, has arranged for Robert Kriebel (Bob), Retired Editor, Journal and Courier (JC) to be the speaker. Bob's presentation is entitled "Riley Revisited." He contributes a weekly JC article entitled "Focus On: Local History" which currently consists of seven articles about military generals with Tippecanoe County connections. Bob is also the author of a book "Tippecanoe at 2000" which is distributed through the Greater Lafayette Chamber of Commerce. Bob will be introduced by President DAN TEDER (President Dan) or OSCAR HOPKINS, President Elect, and Chair, Program Committee.

NOTE: Copies of Bob's book will be available after the meeting on Tuesday, cost is $10.00; if using a check, it should be made payable to the "Tippecanoe Committee on the Millennium."

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors MARTHA CHISCON, 11:15 to 11:45 a.m., and TOM SCHMIDT, 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Greeter GENE HILLS; Invocation STEVE MOTT; Music PAUL ZIEMER; and No High School Guests.

CLUB CONCERNS

Prior to the invocation today, President DAN requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: YB HALL; BOB HIATT; LARRY LANE; JOHN MC KEE; and BEV STONE.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS: As you know there is no Club meeting on Tuesday, December 26, 2000, but in addition, the Club Board at its meeting Monday evening voted to cancel the Tuesday, January 2, 2001 Club meeting. The Board felt that it would not be appropriate to schedule a speaker for that meeting with the strong possibility of low attendance, the thought being that many people would be in Pasadena, CA - hopefully the Purdue football team will be there also.

DICK WALKER, in a recent telephone conversation with BOB GRIFFITHS, indicated that MARJORIE was getting along better and requested that her name be removed from the "Club Concerns" listing.

CHRIS FUNK was successful in putting "Ripples" on the web site from BOLIVIA - he's amazing. Some Rotarians were wondering why they received a "hard" copy as well as it being on the web site; the reason was that CHRIS was not sure if this would be possible from BOLIVIA.

Nick Clark and Kae Moore have resigned from Rotary.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

ANN PIECHOTA, Chair, and JERRY MC CARTHY, Vice Chair, Salvation Army Committee, announced the starting of Rotary's "Bell Ringing" campaign on behalf of the Salvation Army; this is Rotary's oldest and largest community project. ANN noted that "Salvation Army Bell Ringing Envelopes" would be included with the November 28th issue of "Ripples" (this issue will also be mailed to the membership) for Rotarians to use to make individual contributions. "Bell Ringing" will be on Saturday, December 16th, at the same ten sites as last year this translates into the need for 96 Rotarians, family, friends, etc. to be bell ringers at the Salvation Army kettles. JERRY had the sign-up board and it will be at the meetings each Tuesday until December 12th. JERRY will update the "Bell Ringing" schedule on the web site and will gladly take telephone calls at home for sign-ups, changes, etc. The Tuesday, December 12th, issue of "Ripples" will also have the "Bell Ringing" schedule so that everyone will know where and what time.

SMALL GROUP DINNER: JANE TURNER has scheduled a heavy hors d'oeuvre and Holiday drinks for Wednesday, December 13th, at her residence, 1304 Columbia Street, Lafayette, from 6:00 p.m. until the last Rotarian/spouse/special other leave. PROGRAM (November 14, 2000)

JIM TURLEY, noting that November was Rotary International (RI) month, introduced Herbert Pigman, General Secretary of Rotary International (RI) from 1979 to 1986 and again from 1993 to 1995, and currently Vice Chair of RI's PolioPlus Committee, which directs Rotary's nearly $500 million input for polio eradication. Mr. Pigman made a most interesting presentation regarding: (1) History of RI; and (2) Up-to-Date report on the PolioPlus project, the largest public health initiative in history. He noted that: (1) When he joined the RI staff in 1956, single year contributions amounted to $600,000.00 and by the end of the century collections and expenditures amounted to three times that amount every week; (2) In 1917 the RI President created this endowment fund for doing good and assist community goodwill, the balance was $26.50 which was left over from the previous year's RI Convention in Kansas City; (3) A contribution from Paul Harris, founder of Rotary, started the Ambassadorial Scholars program; (4) Last year there were 39,057 new Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) contributors resulting in a total of some 725,000 Paul Harris Fellows worldwide; and (5) Congratulated the Club for having over 50% of the membership as PHFs and for contributing, over the years, in excess of $250,000.00 to RI. Mr. Pigman noted that 20 countries are still polio indebted, mainly INDIA, PAKISTAN, and conflict countries in AFRICA, with two challenges to the complete eradication of polio worldwide: (1) Access to children in conflict countries; and (2) A financial shortfall of approximately $1 billion for 2001-2002 which is being aggressively pursued by Polio Partners Summit which is seeking worldwide corporate support.

VISITING ROTARIANS: Herb Pigman, Boswell.

VISITORS: Betty Pigman, spouse of speaker and Visiting Rotarian, Herbert; Travis Brown (Owner/Operator, USA Mortgage Group Inc.), guest; Marne Helgesen (Director, Center for instructional Excellence, Purdue), introduced by GRIFF (Marne's request to transfer from the Urbana, IL Rotary Club was approved by the Club Board at its meeting Monday evening); Kevin O'Brien (Director, Tippecanoe County Historical Association), guest of DICK GRIPE; Angel Hernandez (Vice President, Soller-Baker Funeral Home, and Retired Vice President, Lafayette Savings Bank), guest of BILL PAPE; and Barbara Coury (Director of Development, School of Nursing), guest of CHRIS SMITH. Marne, Kevin, and Angel are scheduled to be introduced as new Lafayette Rotarians at the Tuesday, November 28th meeting.
