CLUB CONCERNS

CONGRATULATIONS to BOB BROCK who was presented a "Rotary tie" on July 18th, by Rotary International President Frank J. Devlyn in recognition of his recruitment of members into Rotary. These "Rotary ties" are normally given to Rotarians making a $100 contribution to The Rotary International Foundation. In keeping with that tradition, Bob has made a new $100 contribution to the Rotary International Foundation.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY to KEN EWING and family on the death of spouse/mother, LINDA, at 9:55 a.m., Wednesday, July 19, 2000 in St. Elizabeth Medical Center, after a long battle with kidney cancer.

NOTES FROM CLUB, Monday, July 10th, and FOUNDATION, Wednesday, July 12th, BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETINGS:

Club Board: (1) DALE MC HENRY (DALE), Treasurer: Reviewed Cash Receipts and Disbursements Summary Report for June and Fiscal Year Cash Flow Comparison of the past two fiscal years; Noted that President DAN reimburse $1,265.08 for expenses to attend the 2000 Rotary International Convention in Buenos Aires; Fiscal Year 1999-2000 ended with a cash flow surplus of $2,977.00; Recommended approval of the 2000-2001 Rotary year budget, approved by the Board; and Recommended having Thieme & Adair CPA's to conduct a review, perform selected audit procedures, and prepare Federal and Indiana tax returns for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2000, feel will be up to 5% more than the $600.00 paid last year, approved by the Board; (2) Approved membership proposal of Stephanie Hyatt pending approval of the Membership Selection & Classification and Membership Education & Information Committees, and approved the transfer of Leona Cohen from Daybreak to our Club; (3) Consensus of the Board to approve the date (Wednesday of Purdue's "Senior Week" or "Down Week" prior to commencement) and location (University Inn) of the Annual Dinner five years in advance; (4) Consensus of the Board to approve the date (4th Saturday of March) and location (Long Center for the Performing Arts) of the Rotary/PMO Service Above Self Committee Annual Fund Raising activity five years in advance; (5) Task Force (JIM KLUSMAN, Chair; MARVIN BLADE; GENE COURTANEY; GRIFF; BOB GRIFFITHS; BETTY NELSON; KEITH SMITH; and DAN TEDER) presented to the Board, and the Board approved, a four-point proposal to increase Club fellowship: (a) That the Board place some appropriate limit on the bell-to-bell time (45 minutes is suggested as a starting point for discussion, although some on the Task Force recommend a shorter time); (b) That the President be encouraged to begin the practice of deleting some activities during a given meeting, if necessary, to adhere to this time while still allowing sufficient time for a speaker's presentation; (c) That this policy become institutionalized by broad dissemination to the Club, with notification that last-minute requests for announcements from the podium will not be honored; and (d) That the Board direct the Executive Committee to determine, and put into practice, specific ways to build flexibility into weekly meetings (such as decreasing the frequency of certain "traditional" meeting functions or finding new ways to perform such functions); (6) OSCAR HOPKINS, President Elect, and Chair, Program Committee, distributed a paper listing dates and Monthly Program Chairs, and noted that there would be monthly themes, the fifth Tuesday programs would be chaired by alternates and concern special issues, and requested comments - one comment was the suggestion that some programs might be new member(s) giving classification presentations; and (7) President DAN indicated that he would be stressing member retention and fellowship during the year.

Foundation Board: (1) DAVE LANDGREBE, Treasurer, reviewed the Foundation's 4th quarter and compared it to last year's 4th quarter; (2) Funding the cost of installing a lift and tie-down for chair in van for a young cerebral palsy person delayed due to the van being broad sided and the need for an insurance settlement relative to this accident; (3) President DAN reviewed the Club Board meeting for the Foundation Board; (4) Consensus that the Foundation annual report should reflect the total amount of funds generated by members of the Rotary and the Foundation for the Museums of Prophetstown and Long Center Restoration Project and not just the amount that flowed directly through the Treasurer's accounts; and (5) Consensus that each year at the July meeting that the Board would determine appropriate signature authorization(s) for moving funds from Merrill Lynch to the Foundation's Treasurer for distribution - authorized signatures for the 2000-2001 year are STEVE THOMPSON, President, and HOWARD DIESSLIN, Chair, Investment Committee.

PROGRAM (July 25, 2000)

JON HUSTON introduced Diane Morris, Deputy Commissioner, Bureau of Safety Education and Training, who provided an update on the current Indiana labor status. Diane indicated that: (1) State Department of Labor composed of four major divisions, i.e., IOSCHA, State plan of OSCHA; BUSET, the Division that Diane is with; Wage and Hour Commission; and STEP, Statistic, Technology, and Performance; (2) Department of Labor is strong due to the strong economy and backing of the current State administration; and (3) One of their major thrusts is creation of partnerships which affect companies in a positive way.
