UPCOMING PROGRAM (July 25, 2000)

Jonathan Mack, Deputy Commissioner of Labor, State of Indiana, will speak about "Current Indiana Labor Status." Mr. Mack will be introduced by JON HUSTON, Program Coordinator for the month of July.

CLUB CONCERNS

Prior to the invocation today, President DAN TEDER (President DAN) requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; HANLY HAMMEL who called on Monday, July 17th, to cancel his reservation to Tuesday's meeting due to a slipped disc; BOB HIATT; MARV PHILLIPS; BEV STONE; and MARJORIE WALKER, spouse of DICK.

CONGRATULATIONS to Immediate Past President GENE COURTANEY on his being selected as the first winner of the Harold L. Michael Memorial Paul Harris (PHF) Fellow Award. The Award was presented last evening, July 18th, by JIM TURLEY, Chair, International Foundation Committee. This was GENE's second PHF Award and he received a lapel pin with one sapphire stone.

CONGRATULATIONS to BOB BROCK who was presented a "Rotary tie" last evening, July 18th, by Rotary International (RI) President Frank J. Devlyn (RI President Devlyn) in recognition of his recruitment of members into Rotary. These "Rotary ties" are normally given to Rotarians making a $100.00 contribution to The Rotary International Foundation.

CORRECTION: BRUCE HARDING selected by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Fellow Committee as a Fellow of ASEE, BRUCE was honored at the Awards Banquet, ASEE Annual Meeting in St. Louis, MO.

NOTE: The listing of Program Chairs for the Rotary program year, August through July, is not correct. The Rotarians listed as Chairs is correct; however, the month for which each is Chair is not correct, it should be: August - SCOTT RUMBLE; September - NELLIE LECHMAN; October - DENNIS WEIDENAAR; November - MARVIN BLADE; December - KIRK CLARK; January - BOB BROCK; February - DON GENTRY; March - CHRIS JOHANNSEN; April - RAY KAVANAUGH; May - BETTY SUDDARTH; June - STEVE HICKMAN; and July - JIM HANKS.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

SHOTS NOT SPOTS, immunization of Tippecanoe County children against childhood diseases, will again be assisted by Rotary via the Community Service Projects Committee, FRITZ COHEN, Chair. The next Shots Not Spots will be Wednesday, August 9th, and there is need for volunteers for the following times: 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon (setup) - all five slots filled; 12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m. - have one, need two; 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. - have three, need two; and 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. (tear-down) - have one, need five. Sign-up sheet will be on the bulletin board at the back of the banquet room, or contact FRITZ or LEW RUNNELS. PLEASE SIGN UP!

FAMILY FUN DAY  JAN GRIFFIN KOEHLER, Senior Director, Vocational Avenue of Service, noted that Family Fun Day will be held at the home of CHRIS and JACKIE FUNK, Saturday, August 12th (not Friday, August 18 as stated in the paper version of the Ripples). This is an event for Rotarians, children, grandchildren, friends, etc. Swimming, bar-b-que, fellowship. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS - more about this in future "Ripples."

PROGRAM (July 18, 2000)

President DAN introduced RI President Devlyn who made an interesting presentation regarding various aspects of Rotary, i.e., (1) Why do individuals become Rotarians - prestige, networking, fellowship, see value of Four-way Test, etc.; (2) Why do they stay in Rotary - approval and support, service and caring for communities, special projects, thinking about and finding out ways to help communities in far away places, etc.; (3) Rotarians acquire a better understanding of the world through Youth Exchange, Ambassadorial Scholars, Group Study Exchange, and other programs of Rotary; (4) His main thrust will be promoting Rotary membership with recognition pins for Rotarians who excel in recruitment of members; and (5) New emphasis in areas of concern, i.e., world population, literacy for the girl child, promotion of village banking, urban bias, people with disabilities, etc. RI President Devlyn closed by stressing that the secret is Rotary's partnering with other agencies locally, statewide, nationally, and internationally. RI President Devlyn was presented a "Distinguished Citizen Award" by each Mayor DAVID HEATH and Mayor SONYA MARGERUM.

SPECIAL GUESTS: Bissrat Ghebru, Ambassadorial Scholar from NORTH AFRICA, hosted by Zenephia Evans, a member of Daybreak. Bissrat has a Ph. D. degree, is a Plant Geneticist, and spending a month studying at Purdue. Enrico Pinto, Rotary Youth Exchange Student from BRAZIL, hosted by his host family, DAVID and ADRIENNE BOUGH.
