WHY SHOULD YOU BE A ROTARIAN? (Answers to a commonly asked question about Rotary Club membership.)

Why should you be a Rotarian? (1) Professionals today juggle career, family, and personal interests. Little time is left over for community involvement and the satisfaction of volunteerism. (2) You can make the most of the time you give to your community by belonging to the Rotary club. (3) Rotarians achieve together what individuals cannot accomplish alone, and have fund doing it! (4) While Rotary clubs make a real difference in communities around the world, they also offer unparalleled opportunities for individual growth: (a) “Hands-on” experience dealing with issues affecting our local and world communities; (b) Membership in a diverse international network of business and professional leaders; (c) A sense of accomplishment gained from working with your peers on a variety of valuable community and international service projects; and (d) The opportunity to meet Rotarians of other clubs in nearby communities - or anywhere you travel around the world - and have friends in all corners of the globe. Through club activities, members develop and use business skills that can be applied at work - such as leading meetings, developing budgets, spearheading fundraising efforts, and organizing service project. And, club leadership changes annually, so that more people can have the benefit of such leadership training. (From “Link”, Rotary Club of Indianapolis)

BARB DOSTER introduced Rotarian BOB GARRISON, Director, Club Avenue of Service, Chair, Membership Team, and Chair, Membership Retention Committee, who led off by relating plans for the development of a video about the history of the Lafayette Rotary Club. This idea arose out of one of the Rotary Information Sessions conducted by JERRY MC CARTHY when BILL LOVELL noted that most of the information related to Rotary International and there should be more about what our Club does. BOB made a plea to members to search through their old files for old photographs and other items related to the history of the Club and loan them to the group (BOB; CHRIS FUNK; JIM HANKS; and OSCAR HOPKINS) that is developing this special video. He then introduced JIM HANKS who discussed the development of the video shown at the Annual Dinner and noted two corrections that BILL HATFIELD had called to his attention: (1) Approximately 1.2 million Rotarians, not 2 million, worldwide; and (2) Contributions to PolioPlus were $350 million and not $5 million. BOB then showed this video to the Club.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money collectors: JO WADE and SALLY WATLINGTON; Greeting by - FAYE and JERRY COLE; Invocation by ELSA JANLE; Singing led by GREG NAPIER; Rotary piano by HARLEY FREY; and Free Meal Drawing - JIM HANKS and LIZ SOLBERG.
