PLEASE NOTE: NO ROTARY CLUB MEETING, TUESDAY, JULY 4, 2000

Rotarians BOB GARRISON and JIM HANKS, will make a presentation regarding “History of the Lafayette Rotary Club.” BOB and JIM will be introduced by BARB DOSTER, Program Coordinator for June.

MEETING FUNCTIONS: Money Collectors - JO WADE, 11:15 to 11:45 a.m. and SALLY WATLINGTON, 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.; Greeter - FAYE COLE; Invocation - ELSA JANLE; and Music - GREG NAPIER.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: BRUCE OWENS who had rotator cuff surgery at Home Hospital last week and was at Rotary today; LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; BOB HIATT; MARV PHILLIPS; BEV STONE; and MARJORIE WALKER, spouse of DICK.

DEEPEST SYMPATHY to MARTHELLEN HOGUE and family on the death of BOB at 10:00 p.m., Friday, June 16, 2000, in Home Hospital. BOB had been a Rotarian since March 18, 1958, and was extremely active in the activities involving the Purdue Varsity Glee Club, i.e., working on projects, barbecuing chicken at parties, etc. He was nationally and internationally recognized in the poultry industry.

BETTY NELSON (“Purdue University Retirees” picture) will Chair the President’s Advisory Council on Retirement (Council) for 2000-2001; she succeeds HOWARD DIESSLIN. MARGERY ISMAIL and GIL SATTERLY begin three-year terms on the Council in June 2000.

SMALL GROUP DINNERS (Dinners) REPORT from President GENE: During the last year, there have been eight Dinners with 105 Rotarians, spouses, and significant others participating. Thanks to those who hosted these Dinners, and especially to JANE TURNER who coordinated these most enjoyable occasions. The Dinners offer a fine opportunity to interact in a very meaningful manner. Watch for the next Dinners opportunity later in the summer.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

SPECIAL MEETING: Frank J. Devlyn, Rotary International (RI) President for the 2000-2001 Rotary Year, will be the speaker at the Tuesday evening, July 18th, Club meeting. The tentative schedule calls for his arrival in the Greater Lafayette area around 3:30 p.m. for a tour of Prophetstown, hosted by NICK CLARK, and a tour of the Long Center for the Performing Arts, hosted by JIM HANKS. The evening program is scheduled for the Grand Ballroom, University Inn. Cost of the buffet will be $12.00 per person. You should expect a telephone call from a Board member regarding your plans to attend during the next two weeks. REMEMBER, spouses and significant others are cordially invited to attend this special meeting. GRIFF needs a final count by Tuesday, July 11th.

COMMUNITY SERVICE PROJECTS COMMITTEE (Committee) MEETING: LEW RUNNELS, 1999-2000 Chair, and FRITZ COHEN, 2000-2001 Chair, have scheduled a meeting for the 2000-2001 Year Committee for 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, June 27th, Tailgate Lounge, University Inn. Special notices and an agenda will be mailed to everyone on the two committees within the next few days - please plan to attend.

STUDENT GUESTS COMMITTEE (Committee) MEETING: KEN EWING, Chair, has scheduled a meeting for the 2000-2001 Year Committee, immediately after Rotary meeting, Tuesday, June 27th, Tailgate Lounge, University Inn.

JUNE BIRTHDAY TABLE, Tuesday, June 6th, ERNIE POLAND, Chair, reported that Rotarians with birthdays in June contributed $1,019.00 to the Lafayette and International Foundations.

BARB DOSTER introduced Prof. Clay Shields, Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS), Purdue, who made a most interesting presentation regarding computer security. Shields Prof. Shields began his presentation with a request for a show of hands in response to questions regarding their browsing of the internet. He noted that: (1) While browsing, technology allows tracking to determine interest for future advertising and often web requires personal information, i.e., address, age, etc., or cannot get on; (2) This often causes problems, i.e., personal information is given or “leaked” away free; individual has no control over where information goes and very little legal control; what you look at on the web may or may not be you, information is acquired without complete text; and (3) What can one do: Don’t disclose any information that you don’t need to - just lie; and complain to politicians and to those requesting this intrusive information. He offered one e-mail regarding internal tracking technology www.senate.gov/~commerce/hearings/0613pol.pdf, and two for consumer privacy www.guidescope.com and www.anonymizer.com. Prof. Shields’ e-mail, which he put on the overhead, is clay@cs.purdue.edu. Prof. Shields closed his presentation with a Q & A session.
