Jennifer Flora, Executive Director, Mental Health Association of Tippecanoe County, will talk about the “Mental Health Association of Tippecanoe County.” Ms. Flora will be introduced by BARB DOSTER, Program Coordinator for June.

CLUB CONCERNS: Prior to the invocation today, President GENE COURTANEY (President GENE) requested members to keep the following in their thoughts and prayers: LINDA EWING, spouse of KEN; BOB HIATT; BOB HOGUE, talked with spouse, MARTHELLEN, this afternoon, BOB returned home yesterday after spending last week in Home Hospital; MARV PHILLIPS; BEV STONE; and MARJORIE WALKER, spouse of DICK.

  • GOOD NEWS from FRITZ COHEN regarding spouse, LEONA. He and LEONA requested that LEONA be taken off the “concerned list” as they feel LEONA’s surgery was successful and that she is making strong progress.

  • CORRESPONDENCE from LEONA COHEN...Please convey my thanks to the noon Rotarians for the beautiful plant. It was at home when I returned from the hospital - and a beautiful sight. I really appreciate everyone’s concern and good wishes...Sincerely

  • President GENE requested those in attendance to remain standing for a moment following the invocation in memory of BARRIE SIMPSON’s father, Firn L. Dinkins, who died a few weeks ago in Greensburg, PA.

  • MIKE BERENDT will be leaving the service and Rotary on Thursday, June 8th, to take a position in Ellicott City, MD. MIKE requested a few minutes from President GENE to tell everyone goodbye.

  • JIM FOSTER was a member of the 20th graduating class of 31 individuals, of Leadership Lafayette.

  • CONGRATULATIONS to BOB and MARY HANNA whose granddaughter, Charlotte Hanna, daughter of Dr. Robert C. and Lesley Hanna, won top honors; she and classmates tied for third in nation in the national WordMasters challenge in April. She is also one of 7,900 high school seniors from across the U.S. to be awarded a National Merit Scholarship, and will be attending Alma College, Alma, MI.

  • CONGRATULATIONS to HANLY HAMMEL whose grandson (also grandson of former Lafayette Rotarian, Gerry Isaacs), Nathan Isaacs, received special recognition in a program jointly sponsored by the Marshall (MI) Rotary Club and Marshall High School to help students in goal setting. He was singled out as one who had shown the greatest adherence to the spirit of improvement associated with goal setting for the academic year.

  • Lorna Myers has resigned from Rotary.

ANNOUNCEMENTS:

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT: Frank J. Devlyn, Rotary International (RI) President for the 2000-2001 Rotary Year, will be attending the Club’s meeting, Tuesday evening, July 18th, (Club Board voted unanimously to change the official meeting from a noon meeting to an evening meeting). The meeting to be co-hosted by Attica-Williamsport, Crawfordsville, Daybreak, Flora, Frankfort, and Lebanon Rotary Clubs. The tentative schedule calls for RI President Devlyn to arrive in the Greater Lafayette area around 3:30 p.m. for a tour of The Museums at Prophetstown, hosted by NICK CLARK, and then a tour of the Long Center For The Performing Arts, hosted by JIM HANKS. The evening program, Grand Ballroom, University Inn Conference Center and Suites, is tentatively scheduled as follows: 6:00 p.m. - Open Bar; 6:30 p.m. - Buffet line(s) open; 7:15 to 7:30 p.m. - President DAN TEDER convenes the meeting with RI President Devlyn the speaker; and 8:00 - 8:15 p.m. - Adjournment. Cost of the buffet will be $12.00 per person and GRIFF will need an accurate number for a guarantee. At present it is planned to have a “telephone tree” in which every Rotarian will be contacted, probably via telephone, to determine whether he/she plans to attend. HOPEFULLY EACH OF YOU WILL HAVE CHECKED YOUR CALENDAR AND BE ABLE TO TELL THE ROTARIAN CALLING WHETHER YOU WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND. SPOUSES AND SIGNIFICANT OTHERS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND.

VISITORS: ADRIENNE BOUGH, spouse of DAVID; Ben Pearlman, son of SANDY PEARLMAN (Ben just graduated from American University, Washington, D.C.); and Helen Dinkins, mother of BARRIE SIMPSON.

SPECIAL GUEST: Enrico Pinto, Rotary Youth Exchange Student from BRAZIL, made a presentation regarding his experiences while here since last August. DAVID and ADRIENNE BOUGH have been his host family for the second semester.

OakesBARB DOSTER introduced Prof. Bill Oakes, one of three Co-Directors, Engineering Projects in Community Services (EPICS) who made a most interesting presentation about EPICS. Prof. Oakes noted that: This was experiential learning with multi-disciplinary teams, freshmen through seniors in teams of 10-15, need more than technical knowledge to succeed, and community organizations need advice and assistance to design, build, and deploy systems to solve engineering based problems; Goals of EPICS are - Long term start-to-finish design of real systems; Develop teamwork and communication skills; Gain project planning and leadership experience; Develop customer awareness; Gain awareness of ethical, and legal issues; and Foster community involvement; and Cited several community projects. Prof. Oakes closed by indicating that the Club could help by: (1) Spreading the word; (2) Assist with funding, if any agency or industry interested, the cost is $2,000.00 per year; and (3) There is need for team advisors.
